Hansa Brandenburg W12 of Oblt s Z Freidrich Christiansen
« on: March 15, 2015, 06:06:12 AM »
I am not exaggerating when I say that this painting has been years in the making. The original idea came to me in 2008, but unfortunately I didn’t have enough information or reference material to accurately recreate the Zeebrugge Mole. Over the years, bits and pieces came to me slowly. The turning point came last year when I received a book with a perfect aerial shot of the entire Mole showing hangar locations. In the photo several HB W12s could also be seen outside the hangars, which allowed me to figure out the correct size of all of the elements. Even then, working out a composition with all of the various background elements was a huge challenge. My solution was to cast a cloud shadow across the entire mole while still putting the airplane in sunlight.

Beautiful painting Russell! I love the way you've handled the water. It was a nice solution to cast the complicated buildings into shadow to simplify them into a silhouette in the background.

A stunning piece of art work Russell, the buildings in the background are brilliant and add realism to the scene, the water is a superb rendition.

A magnificent Diorama comes to mind, there's so much background and so many stories just bleeding out of this scene. Thanks for posting this Russell, I love it!

This is exactly the pattern in which I would like to build my Hansa Brandenburg W.12

Very very nicely done.
The water surface and color - and these small whitecaps on the wave crests are extremely genuine.
BRAVO!!

It looks like the observer is looking for his girlfriend on the dock. Wonderful painting.

Very atmospheric and evocative painting Russell.

Any chance you could share with us, the aerial photograph of the Mole , that you discovered please?

There seems to be very little to find of what it looked like, and even on Google-earth, it has all changed significantly since the 1914-1918 time period.

Extraordinary work, Russell!  I know I say this every time you show us a new painting, but this might be ma favorite.
