WNW H-B W.12 Early: 1410 C2MG
« on: March 11, 2015, 05:06:29 AM »
Getting a late-ish start on this, for me, anyway. My Roland C.IIa interior is just about finished so I figured it's time to get to work on this beast.

The obligatory shots of the box top and the scheme I've chosen:

Looking forward to painting wood grain again after the gray interior on the C.IIa  :)

If your previous models are anything to go by this one will be a stunner!

Started my W.12 build. Like a few others here, I decided to tackle the floats and their decals first. If I was going to make a hash of the decaling I wanted to know that up front so I could change my build before I began modifying parts. Complicating matters was the fact that I didn't have the correct Tamiya paint (XF-83) on-hand.

After assembling the tops and bottoms of the floats, I sprayed gloss white on the tops.

After letting the gloss white dry for a couple of days, I applied the decals. I cut each decal into three sections and they fit perfectly, going on with no problems except for the expected issue of them not snugging down over the ribbing and other protuberances. Micro-Sol was sure my friend on this--until I went one application too far and some of the needle pricks opened up when they dried.

Once my XF-83 arrives I plan to air brush the undersides and brush paint the white sections on top. To minimize the white showing through the decals my thought is to lightly spray it with Tamiya Smoke or to give it a light mist of a buff color. I'm thinking that the sea water would discolor the lozenge anyway. I'm also trying to noodle out how to apply a splotchiness to the floats (and the sides of the plane) to represent the effect of the salt air and spray on the paint. That's a ways off. Whew.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice start! I have one of these on the way so I'll be paying close attention to your build to learn as much as I can.  :D

Nice work on the float decals Mark..

The reinforcing strips ( if that is the correct word) are the biggest problem to get right.

The reality is that no matter how many applications of decal softener you use, the decal  will not conform exactly over all the bumps, so you may have to do some repair patches if you use the needle.

Enjoy the build it is great fun and the seaplane looks fantastic, lets hope they do another?

Been truckin' along on various facets of this build. Below is a photo of the various wood grain on the interior components. Before I can begin assembling them I need to finish up the inside of the fuselage halves, paint some of the details, and lightly weather them. It's such a shame that all this work will soon be closed up  :) I did try to vary the color of the woods used . . . hoping that the differences are not too stark.
