Pfalz D-IIIa Hans Böhning, Jasta 79(b), 1/72
« on: February 09, 2015, 09:56:20 AM »
Here's the last D-III from my building series. I'm going to have a more 'relaxing' build next (a WWII monoplane), so I'll be away for a while, but still visiting the forum to come and get candy for my eyes.

To sum up the build, I'd say none of both 1/72 models (Roden and MAC) are easy, as they're short-run kits, but there is no alternative...unless Peter Jackson thinks of us 1/72 kit builders. The good side is there's no need for heavy surgery on these kits, they're pretty accurate, but there's a lot of work on details, and to have everything go together properly. This one is a MAC kit, which I preferred to the Roden one because of it's seams on the front fuselage sides.

There is a lot of scratchbuilt details: valve springs, radiator and wing tank pipes, cockpit details, radiator shutter handle, moveable surface hinges, control horns, telescopic gunsight etc). The Spandaus and seatbelts are from Eduard, the figure from Orion. A bit "rough" but nice pose. Metal panels and hatches have been rebuilt with adhesive aluminum, and the engine base and prop are copies of Roden parts from various WWI kits. Home-printed lozenges.

you are waving the flag for the 72nd scalers....Very nicely done!

Thanks. It looks like I've become a WWI aircraft addict...I now have more than a dozen of them in my stash.

Next time i build a german plane with lozenges, I'll try to pre-print the rib shading on the lozenge decals, and will fine tune the colors for the lower lozenges, as the purple appears a little too dark. I will go on with adhesive aluminum for metal panels, I think it looks rather good.

That is a real cracking build. The finer details are really good - difficult to believe that it is in God's Own Scale - but all the better for it.

Beautifully done Vincent, the finish on this model is superb and your home printed lozenge is excellent, the addition of the pilot figure adds the finishing touch, very well done and hard to believe it is 1:72 scale.

Thank you all. I reffered to photos of preserved printed fabric for the lozenges, and the second pic from the top shows it is an efficient camouflage against the background. The outline of the upper wing slightly disappear against the colors of the hill and the fields in the background.

Thanks. I've replaced some of the photos by newer ones with a better depth of field.

Thanks.
No you can't have it Terri, you already have yours!

Very interesting Bruno. It reminds us that Böhning is not just a name in a Jasta roster, but also a family whose story is linked to History, like all families in the world.
