Encore 1/32nd SE5a 56 Squadron: 4891 JTB McCudden
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:52:04 AM »
Well I have started my next build. Honestly I was not going to post a Log as I will most likely do nothing that hasn't been seen before. I am building McCuddens bird,#4863. I will also be substituting Rowans Markings for the Encore kit decals , Thanks Lance! Here is where I am after a couple of days. I have utilized the resin Pulley inserts, Not a Drop in Replacement, and begun the filling and touch up process. I also removed the pour sprues from the Prop. Lastly I have assembled the basic engine. I will be closing up the cowls so no super detailing here. Just need the basic paint job. I Hope you all enjoy my process:

Brilliant start, Amigo!  Looking forward to following along with this one.  Soon, I'll be following your footsteps in 1/48 scale.  Just like old times.
Cheers,
Bud

Nice start Rick! I'll be following the build with much interest.

Like Bud, I'm sort of following in your steps, though at my usual snail's pace. However, I decided against McCudden and am going for Gwilym Lewis's aircraft through the medium of the WNW model. I'm also going to give Richard and Harry's doped linen finishes a go.

Best wishes
Nigel

Great to see that you decided to post your build of this kit Rick, what you have done already looks impressive.

I'm pulling up a chair to watch this one too Rick, as I have the same kit. No doubt I'll learn something along the way.

Cheers,

Chris
You can have it good; You can have it fast; you can have it cheap. Pick any two, but all three are impossible.

The Encore SE.5a is a great value kit, tons of PE & resin - you've made a good start.

I found the pulley inserts took a bit of time & I had to drill right through the wing to get them fitted.

Bud, I am looking forward to your build! It was a lot of fun when you did the 1/48th DVII and I did the WNW kit! Are you planning a DUal build bringing the Roden 1/48th up to the WNW standards like your Tripes? If so it will be even more spectacular.

Well Chris, My opinion is you have become such a great builder of fine WW1 kits that there is little you can still learn from me. I am however glad you will be following along  :D

Yes, right through the wing. My issue was that for some reason they fell short of being even with the opposite surface once installed so filler was used to even out the hole in the wing. I am also going to use the PE triangular frames so have sanded off the resin even with the wing surface. I will then fill the window with epoxy or Micro Krystal Kleer.
