WNW 1/32 Fokker D.VII (Fok) 4301/18 Vzfw.Baurose (OttO)
« on: January 20, 2015, 06:11:26 PM »
Hello,

My first build report. Well, here goes...

This is much too late for the Group Build, but I finally had time after Christmas to begin my first WNW kit. I'm very new to plastic WW1 models so this has been a steep learning curve and very slow going. I've learned so many new techniques on this forum, my thanks to everyone for all the great informative posts and tutorials. The last few weeks of modeling have really put me to the test.

I say I'm new to plastic modeling, but I have been busy building WW1 airplanes, but only in paper. I ventured into plastic, and especially WNW kits, as research for my paper models. I hope I don't get too lost here and forget to build from paper again. ;D  I'll post a few pics of some of my paper airplanes.

I chose to start with the Fokker D.VII because of the wealth of info here. Every aspect of the D.VII is covered in great detail, down to the Fokker style cowl nuts (which, of course I had to buy). I went a bit nuts and bought all the AM stuff I could find, including lozenge decals from Aviattic, which look great (thanks Richard). The only thing I couldn't get my hands on were the spoked wheels from Steven Robson. I guess I'm too late to the party...

So anyway, here are some pics of my subject and AM parts:

And here are the first parts of the cockpit finished:

Thanks, and please, I'm open to any constructive comments. If I did something stupid, don't hold back. :o

And as promised, some paper...

Fokker D.VI 1/33 in progress:

1/33 Oberursel 9 Cylinder Engine -paper with wire cooling fins:

1/33 Paper layered propeller. Prop hub is all paper too:

1/33 Paper Spandau MG in progress. Holes in cooling jacket are hand cut.

1/250 Fokker D.VII.  I think Terri and Bo are familiar with the Spade on this one :)

With big brother, 1/60 scale:

My original reason for joining this forum was to research and learn new techniques to help bring my paper models to the level of the models that are being created here.
The first thing I noticed was the detail and weathered finish on the plastic kits far exceeded most paper kits. I began re-texturing my Fokker D.VI.

Here are pics of the new images vs the old:

And finally, here is the design process for the 3D paper model done in Rhino3D

Thanks,
George

You don't get to see so heavily used aircraft too often. Nice choice.

Your Wingnuts D.VII is looking excellent, you have achieved superb results with the cockpit, the painting and detailing is second to none.

The D.VI in paper is amazing and the engine is totally awesome, I often wondered how the cylinders were done, and the propeller is as good as any laminated wood propeller.

The tiny little 1:250 D.VII is simply incredible, how you can see it let alone build it is beyond me, well done.

Great stuff George all around! The DVII cockpit is excellent. One thing I will point out, because I think you will want to know this for projects to follow-- you have the reinforcement tubes that you added to the rudder bar in the wrong place. They should wrap around the hub, if that makes sense.

The paper stuff is fantastic and I would very much like to see a full build log of these projects as well.

Nice way to jump in!

George,
This is quite a way to introduce your work! The WNW D.VII is a beautiful start, and I really like what you've accomplished with the "worn/used" look, my preference as well. I am totally impressed by the quality of your paper models, they are magnificent pieces of work and the "sub-miniature D.VII is just incredible!
You may be new to plastic but your work certainly gives the opposite impression. I'm really looking forward to seeing this Build progress.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Gary, Stephan, Des, Bo, Lance, and Lukas for the nice compliments. They mean a lot coming from you guys.

Gary- To answer your question, the MG magazine and empty belt box started with an airbrushed coat of Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminum and then lighter and darker metallic paints, XF-56, XF-32, and XF-11 were sponged on with a fine make-up sponge. After that was completely dry, washes of AK Interactive Engine Grime, Engine Oil, and Fuel Stains were added to bring out the rivet and seam detail, and also add warm colors to contrast the cool silvery metal. The Fuel Tank was painted the same way starting with Tamiya X-31 Titanium Gold, then sponging on XF-28 Dark Copper, and some of the silvery colors for warm/cool contrast. Finally the AK washes were added. Sorry for the long winded explanation.  :o

Des- about how I made the tiny Fokker, one word: Optivisor!

Bo- thanks for the info on the tubes around the rudder bar. I've gone back through my reference photos and I see it now, duh! Now I gotta take a hammer to the cockpit and redo it!  :'(. No, I'll fix it next time, but this one will be our little secret.

Also, Bo, I like your idea about a build thread for my paper D.VI. I've already started one on the papermodelers.com forum, but I didn't think you guys would be interested in paper here. As soon as my WNW D.VII is finished I'll start a new thread here.

Thanks,
George

Hi George.  I have boards for Under Construction, Scratch Build, Vacform and Resin, if you like I can start a new board for Paper Models.

George,
Your work is Extraordinary! I have seen some paper models that are terrific but yours seem to be an even higher caliber ! The rotary engine and prop are as good as any I have seen in plastic! As for the WNW kit, Just AWESOME work so far! Like all of the others I would love to see a build log on the DVI! Thanks for sharing all of the Photos!!

Wow, cool, Des. That would be great if there is enough interest here for that.

I know there is an active interest in WW1 on papermodelers.com and I can invite them to share their work here. There is a nice website to purchase and download kits to print and build called ecardmodels.com (go to Aircraft/Military/World War 1 on the left side of the page). In the WW1 airplane category alone there are 539 kits available! I'm in no way affiliated with them, but I've downloaded many very nice kits.

I won't be ready for a few months to start my build thread on my paper D.VI since I'm working on my plastic D.VII, but I'll post as soon as possible.

Thanks!
George

No problems at all George, I will set up the new board and call it Paper Models. Please invite as many paper modelers over as you like, I'm sure that most of our members will be very keen to see their work.
