Well, looking at my profile I see that I have been “lurking” here for a touch over two years, so, I figured I should go ahead and introduce myself.
Like many of us, I built models in my younger days until the distractions of teenage years kicked in. I briefly came back to modelling in my 20s, but that didn’t stick. I then came back to modelling again in 2007 and have been going strong since. My primary interest in modelling is dioramas. I don’t have any particular subject that I like the most, but, much of my work is in 1/35 armour simply because of the figures available. That being said, I’ve got a bunch of stories in my mind that I’d like to tell that are not armour related, so, I’ve worked on developing my modelling pretty much across the board, from 1/24 car models down to 1/350 ship models and from 25mm figures up to 75mm figures.
All of that aside, I just love scale models, so, I will often pick up kits just because I like the subject matter and want to build it, figuring I’ll decide how to fit it into a story somehow, at some point. That is what led me to WWI aircraft. I know I am preaching to the choir here, but, what scale model can be cooler than a fully rigged biplane in a crazy WWI scheme?
So, I hope to be more active here going forward and am looking forward to continuing to learn from you all.
Finally, here, in the order I finished them, are the WWI models I’ve completed. (There were others intermixed, but, they got binned for a variety of reasons.)
Eduard Fokker DVII – should have rib tapes but it was a major struggle, for me, to get the lozenge on and after I had trouble with the first rib tape I went to apply, I decided to live without.
Eduard Pfalz DIIIa – I think I saw something the other day on this forum that this scheme probably isn’t correct, but, I was happy with how this came out, especially because I managed to rig something. Rigging is EZ-Line.
Roden Albatros DI – First and only 1/32 model I’ve done. The color is suspect and the tail shouldn’t be all white,
and, I ended up having to mask the national markings and make my own for the skull marking since the Roden decals were… problematic, but, I am reasonably pleased with it. Rigged with invisible thread and brass tube as explained by Des on the front page.
Eduard Nieuport 17 – Weekend edition with AM parts for seatbelts and control horns. Rigged primarily with EZ-Line. The figure is from the Eduard French aircrew set. With this one, I finally feel like I am getting somewhere and am pretty much happy with the end result. That’s why it’s the only one that gets a pilot.
