The clear glass tubes were used on fuel tanks and oil tanks to give the pilot a visual indication of fuel/oil quantity. This was commonly used before the introduction of fuel gauges on the instrument panel.

thank you all for your kind comments!
Lance: thank you my friend! Your explanation really clarifies all!
I understand now, but what was it used for?

Edo,
The level of fuel in the tank would be matched by the level of fuel visible in the glass pipe, thus the Pilot could verify how much fuel he had before flight. With the tank being on top of the wing a visual check would be a lot easier then climbing up and "dipping" or looking into the tank to ensure a full fuel load. I wouldn't think it would be very useful in flight.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you. This makes a lot of sense!
Lance, yes, it wolud be hard to climb on the wing and check during flight...  ;)
This remembers me those old movies of flying circus where people walked on wings during flight and jumped from one aircraft to the next... well, nobody was shooting at them, nevertheless quite a scary sport !

I think that prop looks absolutely gorgeous!!!  ;) When I get home I'm planning to have a go with pencils on my spare props that I have left :) Great to see your progress!!!

thank you very much, my friends!
your comments are very supportive!

to tell the truth, a good friend of mine  ;), told me that the lamination is not appropriate for british prop, as it was more a german feature... so the prop is currently been washed anew with alcohol and it is being repainted... I'll show you some picture soon.,
nevertheless, the pencil method is great, it gives you a lot of freedom on what colour you want to stress, resulting in different wood shades, and it very easy to control!  you should defintely give it a try!

Came in a little late on this thread, but am very interested in the "pencil method."  And recommendations on the brand of pencils; perhaps a little tutorial on how to progress through the process.  Really enjoy seeing the various creative methods used by each contributor this this forum.  Makes the model building a lot of fun!

hallo rickcap!
the wood grain by pencil is a great technique indeed!
but i am only trying to emulate what can be done by the master of this techinque: Mastro Bertl (aka umlaufmotor).
if you whant a tutorial, you should have a look at the thread 'painting laminated props' (link below)

forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com » WW1 Aircraft Modeling » Hints and Tips/Questions about modeling » Painting laminated props?

also, in that thread, you will find another cross reference to a build by Bertl with a more extensive tutorial, here is the link.

I remember a series of tutorial by Bertl on various subjects which were very interesting, but I can't find them right now... maybe somone else can help....

Indeed, Bertl has a whole sub-forum here devoted to his excellent tutorials:

Great work, Edo!

Hi friends!
I have some update for you: wings and fusolage painted and mounted.
As I told you I tryed to emulate canvas texture by pressing a cloth on the surface of the model that was previously covered with plastic glue. To tell the truth, even if the result was not that bad and consistent all over the plane, I think that the effort is not worthy, fortunately no damage done either!
The ribs shadow is made with pastels powder, and this time I like the result!
Lastly, I decided to paint the roundels, as I don't like very much the kit decals particularely the one 'hand painted' surely historically accurate, but not my liking...  ;)

ciao
Edo

She is absolutely stunning Edo, the weathering effects you have incorporated are brilliant and the rib shading is superb, the rigging is perfectly executed, well done.
