Rudder crosses applied, elevator repositioned and primed, ailerons cut off and slots cut in upper wing.

Incidentally, Dragon/DML based their bust of Udet that came with that one version of their D.VII kit on this photo.

Xan, I'm sure others here have much more knowledge about this, but the overspray was probably some sort of camouflage.  The varnished light wood on the D.III was pretty bright.
