1/48 Eduard Albatros D.III Ernst Udet's 1941/16
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:29:23 AM »
Started a while ago, this is the last of my Udet Albatros machines.  It's the basic old Eduard kit, with the Eduard D.III photoetch set and a replacement engine donated from the Karaya Halberstadt Cl.IV.  I know I took shots of the interior before sealing it up but for the life of me I can't find them.  Here's the box top and sprues minus the fuselage and tail feathers.

So the main thing I wanted to try out with this build are the fabulous Uschi woodgrain decals.  I'm using the Extra Fine Ronny Bar set. I undercoated with Tamiya Radome tan and highlighted the panel lines slightly.

I've overcoated the decals with a light coat of Tamiya clear yellow; you can see the difference in the tail, which hasn't been overcoated yet.  The decals go on well.  They're pretty tough, although they do tear easily if you don't use a very sharp blade to trim them after they are on. They went down nicely with Micro Set and Micro Sol.  I'm very pleased with the result.  It could be argued that the grain is too intense for 1/48; however, I'm sure repeated coats of clear orange and yellow will soften it.  In my case, because this machine will be oversprayed with brown, that's not too much of an issue.  The one photo of it shows what appears to be a splotchy finish indicating a spray gun was used.  I want the wood grain to show through, so I'll use light coats with the airbrush.  Next up will be applying the insignia and numbers, since the overcoat goes over the white on the fuselage crosses.

You're off to a great start, Drew!  Those Uschi decals look fantastic.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks!
A few other points: the fuel tank is scratched and the incorrect front fuselage panel line have been filled and new ones scribed.  I also removed all the vents and hatches since I'll use the photo etch pieces.

You have made great progress with this model already and so far it is looking very nice, the wood decals are impressive.

Thanks very much!
Slow progress, but I've gotten the decals on that need to be in place before the brown overcoat.  All sealed with Future now and ready.  I am going with the wood fairings fore and aft of the lower wings instead of metal.

Overcoating is done.  I used Tamiya red brown acrylic and lightly airbrushed it on trying to get the splotchy effect it appears to have in the photo.  I'll coat with Future then apply the tail cross, which still had the white border.
