Drew, they all look great, but I love the varnished wood fuselage.  Did I miss a discussion of your technique to achieve that finish?

Great models! And a very interesting idea to display this bunch of famous birds side by side.

Thanks again!
Chris, I started these builds over on the Great War in the Air Forum before it shut down.  If it ever gets up again I will post the links.
My technique for the wood is pretty simple.  I sprayed Misterkit German clear doped linen as the base, then applied oil burnt sienna with a tooth pick and wiped over panel by panel with a paper towel.  Nothing fancy, but tried to get the grain effect.  I did a few panels on each side and let them dry before moving to the adjacent panels.  After a week or so of drying I airbrushed Tamiya clear yellow and clear orange.  Then a coat of Future, decals, and a coat of satin.  On the second D.III I'm doing I used Uschi's woodgrain decals.  They are amazing and I think that's the way I'm going from now on.

Drew,

Thanks for the reply, that technique works well for you.  I look forward to seeing what you do with the Uschi decals.

Getting ready to attach the top wing.

Drew

The project is coming along beautifully, Drew.  Is the
Silbergrau the MisterKit paint?

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks, all!

Ernie, the silver is Vallejo Aluminum with an overcoat of Micro Satin to knock the shine down a bit.

Top wing is now glued on.  Phew!  Always a bit hairy for me.  Rigging is in the lower holes and needs to be tightened and glued.  I also painted the wheels today.

Isn't it such a relief to get that top wing on. Things are looking really good Drew.

Best wishes

Thanks again!  Yes, getting the top wing on properly is always stressful!
