Roden 1/32nd Albatros D-I Converted to the Prototype
« on: September 10, 2014, 02:43:18 PM »
All,

Here it is and I'm calling it done.  I got all the fasteners on last night and did the final details like the water expansion tube installed.  I really like the final outcome and I've never seen a D-I in the flesh...let alone a Prototype!

What I did from the Nose (approximately)...

1) Put on valve springs
2) Added plug wires
3) Fasteners on the cowling added
4) Rhino exhaust created, overflow tube added
5) Modified top fuselage cover since (I thought!) there were no guns (turns out there was one  :'()
6) Modified the upper wing cut out to be much more shallow
7) Adjusted the wing stagger to be a bit more vertical (seemed this way to me based on pictures...not sure though)
8) Added external rudder controls/horns/wires
9) Modified the stabilizer and elevator to reflect a non-balanced flying surface.
10) Home made turn buckles and functional rigging
11) Wheel shocks
12) Painted on markings (except the manufacturer's mark on the rudder)

Thanks for looking.  An end to a very nice project.

Cheers,

Dan

Congratulations on a fine representation of the prototype. Do not worry about the mising MG; it's a part of Murphy's law that those pieces of information pop up immediately after you have finished something.

Dan,

This was an interesting project to watch and all your (clever conversion) hard work has paid off resulting in something a bit different - great work, mate.

Well done, Dan! A beautiful and clean build . . . the wood graining looks extremely natural.

Nice work!  Nice to see something we don't see very often!

Absolutely stunning, Dan!  Quite possibly my favorite Albatros build in quite some time.
Cheers,
Bud

Wow!  Thanks, everybody.  This is one build I've always wanted to try and it pretty much turned out to expectation.  I can't say that about many of my builds!  ;)

Bud...thanks!  But have you seen Bo's Albi???   ::) ::)  THAT is a masterpiece.

I can't wait to put my D-I next to a combat ready D-I, II, III and V!  I should have the whole family and will be looking for another D-I and II kit at an up and coming model show in Oregon.  Keeping my fingers crossed...

Again, thanks everyone for your comments and inspiration.

Dan
