Albatros poster by Ludwig Hohlwein
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:31:13 PM »
This famous poster is a mystery to me - it shows a single seat Albatros but it has two bay wings? Artistic license or can someone identify the aeroplane?

Artistic license is my guess. It may have been he was working from several photos and the details of the strut arrangements simply escaped him, and he put in what seemed typical to him. I think this is supposed to be a DV actually. Notice how the struts connect to the leading and trailing edges of the lower wing -- not where the spars would be even if it had two.

Great image no matter.

Or it is supposed to be an Albatros CV, and the raised rear cockpit is not really apparent from this angle. Probably more plausible. Strut connections at the trailing edge just a mistake -- probably wasn't clear in the original photo....

Jamo, my guess is a C.X or even a C.XII.  The exposed cylinder heads, the very slight outward curve of the rear decking and just the size of it lead me to that conclusion.  I think the C.X Datafile has that very photo.  I'll see if I can find it.
Cheers,
Bud

mmmm yeah maybe, but artistic license employed in any case -- no Alby two seater had the ventral fin, the C.vii c.x and c.xii had upward exhausts, and the struts attached to the trailing edge is just a pure figment.

edit -- c.xii did have a ventral fin! Shows what I know lol :)

I think Bud's right -- it's a C.XII

Can you imagine a WNW C.XII?  Now, that I would buy.
Cheers,
Bud

From the C.XII, they could also do a J.I and a J.II.  So many very cool markings options with those two.  Off course, they would be some real beasts, pretty much taking up all the remaining living space in my house.  Could always move, I s'pose.
Cheers,
Bud

I'd go for that, too!  Although, I do have the Jager C.X and the J.I in my stash, a nice, high quality 1/48 injected kit along the lines of the Gaspatch Salmson would really be a thrill.
Cheers,
Bud

another super cool poster there...

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before, but is there somewhere you can purchase reproductions of these posters that have been shown?
