Refinishing the old DML Dr.1 mostly just for fun
« on: August 22, 2014, 07:20:06 AM »
Still awaiting one last box of goodies for the Fokker D.VII Group Build this week, and I wanted to play with some color pencils on a few old propellers.  I had these two veteran Dr.I's from DML that I built in the hermit-like void of my pre-internet apartment back in the early 90's.  They were originally in a mixture of decals for Baumer's 204/17 and MvR's 152/17.  Both of them were my first attempts at the Fokker streaky olive back before I had any idea what it really looked like or had a clue what I was doing.  So, I decided to give these two a makeover as MvR's 425/17 and Jacobs' enigmatic "extra" Triplane- sometimes identified as 470/17. I partially disassembled both, removed the decals, filled and sanded a few seams, polished them up and played with some paints- neglected to do any new washing or weathering. They look fine in the case as "3-footers". Here's a few before and after photos (including a couple of my Jacobs Duo w/Eduard Albatros D.II):

A very nice transformation! The DML kit wasn't/isn't too bad just a bit fiddly with the PE struts. I have actually been contemplating doing an all red triplane you may have inspired me to actually carry through with the thought!

Thanks Rick & Alb!  Every so often when I'm more in the mood to paint & decal rather than build I'll grab a really old one and re-finish it.  Usually only if the original scheme is a mess or proven inaccurate.  I didn't repaint the propellers on these, just hit them quickly with some color pencils (one brown, one black, and a cream color to touch up the lighter areas) as a bench test of the technique illustrated by Bertl a few days ago. His detailed demo is on Page 16 of his Eindekker project. (Link below should take you to the thread):

Hello Vickers. It sounds as if you had good fun revisiting them. Doesn't the outcome look good?

Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks for your kind comments on the Dr. I makeover, my friends!  Only on very rare occasions will I actually discard a model, but getting another close look at my pair of DMLs has given me new appreciation for the Eduard 1/48th Triplanes in my stash. Certainly looking forward to putting one or two of those on the bench, but that will have to wait until after the D.VII Group Build.

Vickers,

Lovely collection of DR1 models, but I also really like the look of your stunning Albatros DII as well.
