Nieuport Triplane, 1/48 conversion
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:32:34 AM »
Here is my build of the Nieuport Triplane in 1/48 scale.  It is built using the Eduard Nieuport 17 fuselage and resin wings and struts from SPIN model.  I built it for the WW1 contest over at Swanny's Models, and managed to win 3rd place.  The conversion set is designed to build the British triplane, which was finished in aluminum dope.  Being more of a fan of French aircraft, I modified it to the earlier French version, the ailerons were replaced, a Lewis gun was used instead of a Vickers, the Cone de Penetration was used, and I painted it with the French 4 color camouflage as used on Nieuport 16s and early Nieuport 17s.  For rigging I used Bob's buckles and EZ line white colored with a silver sharpie marker.  The whole build can be seen at: http://www.swannysmodels.com/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1394396137
Thanks for looking,
Dave C

Wow - that is a fine build - what a complicated wing arrangement - must have been a pain to get that all put together and lined up?

Just beautiful. As beautiful as it is unusual. Congrats, Dave, a well deserved win in the contest!

Nice work on a machine that we seldom, if ever, see modeled. That upper wing arrangement certainly looks fragile, but "triplane fever" resulted in many such developments. Congratulations on your win!

Thanks Petrov, the wing alignment was not too bad, the lower wing and fuselage bottom is one piece with a metal rod inside for the spar so it will stay straight.  The only thing that looks off is the lower wing has built in sweep back, same as the Nieuport 17, but plans in Windsock show it to be a straight lower wing with no sweep back.  I ended up using the kit part as is since it had the wire built in I did not want to cut it and try to reposition it. I used the scale plans from Windsock to position the center wings, and pinned them in place with brass rod.  The one piece resin struts allowed me to line them up easily, and I made a jig from Lego blocks to keep them straight, and the upper wing dropped right onto the struts on the wings.  I used brass Struts material for the cabine struts holding up the top wing as I didn't think the thin resin ones would hold the wing up straight.

Beautiful job, Dave!  You have a taste for the esoteric, kinda like I do.

I thought that conversions in God's Own Scale were difficult enough - you have demonstrated a whole new level of skill there. Congratulations on your place in the competition - well deserved and no mistake.
