Fokker Dr.I
« on: August 13, 2014, 10:45:00 AM »
I would like to make a representation the Fokker Dr.I (brave for a build log virgin who usually cuts lots of corners and throws parts away)  :)

Are there any Fokker Dr.I fans in the forum who can help me when I get stuck or stuff-up?

Haven't made a final decision on which Dr.I to build but something like the following may be interesting.

Manfred von Richthofen: Fokker Dr.I 141/17   Adlershof  1917

I have the Roden/Encore (F.I) kit in 1/32 scale.  Reckon I could start this one in a couple of months.  Are we allowed to do very slow build logs in this forum?
(I'm a 6 to 12 month kind of guy)

Suggestions for aftermarket parts most welcome:

- ? Roden/Encore (F.I) kit
- Master Model Spandau LMG by Piotr Czerkasow
- ? Decals
- Axial propeller by The Micro Group
- Undercarriage struts, may have to scratch build these

I am sure many here will be able to help with any minor difficulties you encounter. Those tripes will certainly be a showcase for Spoked wheels  ;)

As long as they don't involve bananas or S&M rodents.

I, too, have the Roden Dr.I and it's in the running for my next build. Also, I'm a sloooow builder in the 6-12 mo. range.  :)

Master barrels, of course.
Vector UR.II is not bad but whatever Lucasz comes up with will blow it away
RB seatbelts have nicer buckles/fittings than HGW
Don't bother with SCAL white metal struts
Aviattic / Kootje thinned cowling -- yes

Books :
Kagero 3D book -- great
Fokker Dr.I Jagdstaffeln GvW -- great marking reference esp
Imrie Dr.I book -- not so much for modeling ref but for historical context recommended

You will need a set of wire wheels  :P
Apparently, there is this bloke in OZ who can string 'em up in no time, but is often distracted by cute furry critters with big teeth  ;D

Ha Ha Ha

Scratch build the flash guards that sit under the muzzles. Simples  ;)

Oh yes, the wheels!

Have 8 x sets of Eindecker orders to fill first.  (or should I just cancel them?) Ahhhhhh,  ;D ;D ;D ;D that was really evil, promise I'll do them first and not get distracted.

Specs for 710 x 85 Fokker Dr.I wheel:
- rim = 1.8mm wide
- rim OD = 16.875mm (go for 16.8mm)
- spokes N = 32, steel alloy OD = 0.3mm
- Hub: brass 1.5mm OD with 2mm OD flanges, oh and a closed nipple thingo, CAP! on the axel
- Nasty little black rubber tyres (call Lance and Michal Svehla find out how they painted theirs)

Hmmm, instrument bezels? probably need some of these.

- Vector UR.II ? don't know who these guys are, oh and who is Lucasz? and has he got a UR.II

Vector make nice aftermarket resin, but it is 'true scale', so often difficult to shoehorn into kits. Lukasz is the man behind Taurus, and in my opinion makes better stuff than Vector. He hasn't done a URII in 1/32 yet, but his 1/48 one is superb ;)

Hmmm, I'll have to think about the engine.  If Lukasz isn't available, I may have to use the kit part.  The F.I kit has a resin engine, or it maybe shock-horror the kit part.  Has anyone put a Vector UR.II into a Roden Dr.I kit with a Ron Kootje cowling?

Also: I'm interested in some opinions on wether the cowling in the above photos was painted green or just presents as bare metal?  I'm legally blind

Oh, I may also have to dawn raid The Red Barron's stash of decals for the serial numbers  :o

Oh, I'm also interested in the streaky green camouflage.  I reckon this one was streaky green applied over a base coat of blue; so it would be green and blue.

And a nice skinny seat.
