FLY MODEL?
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:15:14 PM »
I believe that I have a FLY Model Fokker Dr.I in my stash, I don't know much about them.... The FLY that is.

Are FLY Models a good kit?
Anything good or bad to watch for?

Thanks in advance, Jay

I have never built one of their kits but from what I have heard and read they appear to be pretty good.

I own a few Fly kits, and I'm currently building their 1/72 Avro Avrocar.  The kits are typical short-run Czech kits.  They have slightly soft plastic with large molding gates, finely incised details, and resin detail parts.  The fit is average, with filling needed on some joints, and the parts have a smooth, glossy finish that takes paint and primers well.

I don't have any WW1 subjects though, so I can't comment on those specifically.

Thanks Baron, Des, and Albie for your input.  :)

Thank You Petero for your concise review.  8)
That gives a pretty good idea of what's involved and an insight to the level of quality.
Are the decals any good?

i only have the roland, its decent, about the quality of a special hobby kit. the main critique on this kit was that the klinkerrumf were just scribed rather than overlapping .the blue max kit did a better job of this.i want to get the early sva-5 as well but they say the blue max macchi m5 has a more accurate fuselage shape especially in the nose area.

You're very welcome!  I'm glad to be able to help  ;D

As for the decals, they look thin and well printed, but I haven't applied any of them yet. I should be using them in the next several days, so I'll let you know!

Thanks to both of you, I look forward to seeing progress on these FLY Models.

I seem to remember that my FLY Fokker Dr.I was not complete when I acquired it. I'll have to find it.

Cheers, Jay

I've done some decaling now, so here are my impressions...

The decals are very thin and opaque, and loosen up quickly after a brief dip in room temperature water.  I used Mr. Mark Setter, and they were easy to position and snugged down into the panel lines nicely.  The Avrocar is finished with Alclad Aluminum, and the carrier film between letters on the U.S. AIR FORCE and other lettering disappeared completely into the background.  The thinness does make them fold rather easily, so care is needed when sliding them off the backing and positioning them.

The only problem is that the red on my sheet is badly out of register.  There are several red lines which are printed with a white background (for opacity), and the white background and red line are out of register by about half the line width.  This is likely a random problem, but it's very annoying nonetheless.

Other than the out of register problem, I'm very pleased with the Fly decals.

Thank You Peter for this valuable insight.
It sounds like these decals are desirable as long as they are reasonably in register.  8)
