I Know I'm Getting Older, But . . .
« on: June 15, 2014, 01:45:09 AM »
So, I sit down this morning to add a woodgrain effect on the cockpit floor of my D.VII. I know that Liquin Original comes highly recommended as a drying agent, so I have a brand new bottle just waiting for the lid to be cracked.

Ah, ha . . . typical child proof safety cap so I push down and twist. No result other than the cap spinning. Hmmm  . . . must need more pressure down while squeezing the side of the cap while turning. This is getting complicated but I've opened a pill bottle or two in my day. Hmmm . . . still no joy as the cap spins merrily away, accomplishing nothing. This time I stick my tongue out the side of my mouth as that always helps. Still no joy. Okay, NOW I'll look for instructions.

What the heck are these Egyptian hieroglyphics doing on the top of the cap?

Have I found the code to Tutankhamen's crypt?

Oh . . . I think that's a thumb and forefinger. Okay, push down, squeeze, turn, add some tongue action and . . . still no joy. I'm always up for a challenge, but this is getting ridiculous. I've spent half an hour at this now so I'll sheepishly ask my engineer son to show me how to do it. Drat! He's a chemical engineer. I knew he should've taken mechanical! Well, there's nothing left but to ask my wife. I know from experience that she knows everything. Evidently, not this!

Last resort is to drag my sorry butt back to the shop and use the heavy artillery. Hack saw the lid off? Better not. I need those left hand fingers. Ah, ha for the second time!

No pill bottle is equal to a man armed with Channellocks and an empty baby food jar.

One hour after starting, who cares about modelling now. Certainly not me.

Cheers,

Chris

A stirring, epic saga of man's determination to overcome all obstacles.  Bravo, Chris!  Congratulations on not letting that stupid little bottle beat you into submission.  Actually, I had the same thing happen with my first bottle of Liquin.  If that crap sits on the shelf long enough, it hardens like epoxy and has to be blasted off.  At least you didn't resort to explosives.
Cheers,
Bud

Chris,

congratulations on your success. I would have thrown the bottle away shortly after the "stick the tongue out" part.

I have the same problem with the Liquin cap.  It's an adult-proof cap!

Cheers,

It's funny how a little piece of plastic can turn a grown man into
a blithering idiot.  Nicely done, Chris...now I don't feel so bad opening
stubborn caps with my pipe wrench. ::) ;D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

That's what you get Chris, with these 'fancy Dan' ergonomically designed , adult-proof containers. I bet the design team put on a very slick PowerPoint presentation in front of the W&N senior execs.

Best wishes and congratulations
Nigel

Nice save! I have the same problem with cans of stains, and solvents. I just go straight for the razor knife now, and cut the "safety" cap off. Life was so much simpler in the sixties. We used thinner to clean brushes, and knew if we drank it or snorted it, bad things would happen, and one would be considered stupid to have done so.

Hi Chris:
After you pointed it out, I did see the thumb and forefinger, but; it looked more like an image on the wall of Tutenkhamens tomb than a thumb and forefinger.  Very confusing.  I would have done the same thing, but I think much earlier in the evolution.  I don't have the patience any more for such tom foolery as child proof caps.  If parents would parent rather than produce we wouldn't need such devices.  Rant mode off.

Best
