Here are my latest efforts - a pair of Sopwith's finest. The Pup is Airfix and the Camel is Revell. I have done only the most basic rigging due to the way the struts fit into the wings on both of these kits and decided to quit whilst I was ahead. I have, however, fitted rigging to the undercarriage of the Pup - a first for me.

I've been working on this one for almost a month, on and off. To avoid the problems I had with some of the struts warping on the Gotha G.IV I have rigged this one with nylon thread. The fact that lozenge camo decal had to be applied to both upper and lower wing surfaces, and the fuselage, made it a more difficult build than the previous Gotha.





And this morning I built this cheeky little Junkers D.1. Built, painted and decalled in a morning. No rigging - easy!

Nice work Squiffy! Those Roden 1:72 bombers may be the only realistic way that I would be able to build and display a Gotha or a Zeppelin Staaken. Bargain priced, too! How'd you like them for buildability? Challenging but doable, or headwinds the entire way?

Hi Lindsay,

I found this one to be quite challenging, especially as the instructions contradicted the box illustration and themselves with regard to the struts above the engine nacelles. In fact the struts in the entire build are a challenge, being so flimsy and thin.

As you say, they are bargain-priced but I don't understand how Roden price these things when a Gotha costs around £21 yet the Zeppelin is almost £80!

How were the decals with that kit? I have read stories about Roden decals and am wondering whether to buy others instead. In fact they are one of the reasons why mine has been stalled for a long time.

The lozenge decal was absolutely brilliant. It didn't suffer any breakages and was fine enough to settle in and show up details on the fuselage mouldings and ribs on the wings. The crosses and other details, which were on a seperate sheet, were a bit fragile and I had a few breakages but nothing major.

Here are a couple of Camels that I have finished today.

B6299 as flown by Flt. Lt. Norman Mc Gregor of Naval 10.

Revell Kit. I didn't use the stripe decals in the kit but painted them on, with the help of masking tape, as I have finished it not as per instructions but as shown in the Osprey book 'Sopwith Camel Aces of World War 1'.

B7270, as flown by Capt. Roy Brown of 209 sqn.

Revell kit. I left off the fuselage roundels and the red fuselage stripe that were in the kit and finished it as per the above mentioned book illustration.

I thought I was a fast model builder - you are quick!

All great builds but I do like the Revell Camels especially the RNAS naval 10 version.
