Bricks or pavement for dioramas
« on: May 16, 2014, 11:59:04 AM »
I'm thinking about building a stand for my first WWI aircraft build, and apparently there were no concrete runways yet back in WWI...
I noticed pavement on some period pics. What was the color? how would you build scale pavement for dioramas? Thanks for any help.

Not only were the runways not paved, neither were most roads 100 years ago, especially in rural areas where fighter airfields were situated. If you pore over the photos from that era you don't see too many airplanes parked on pavement. Still, maybe in a factory setting or at a field like Boistrancourt (where there was a large chateau adjacent to the flying field and even a factory nearby) -- maybe there was a paved surface here or there...

OK thanks for the info Bo. It means that the pics I saw are rather exceptions and not the rule. As a conclusion, I guess that most airfields were just grass-covered fields.

Thanks. I know Nordland, I recently ordered W&W lozenges from them.
But I'm a bit disappointed, I was looking forward to have a paved ground for my WIP Alby...I'm thinking about making a mix: grass for the main terrain and in a corner, a small paved area with a mechanic working on the engine on the wooden stand.

This probably explains why tou can find pics of aircraft on paved areas...
Very good diorama idea, I think I will use it for a future project.
