sun-bleached weathering
« on: April 22, 2014, 07:12:49 AM »
I'm in the process of building a 1:72 Bristol M1.C which I will finish as C4096 of 150 Sqn. in Macedonia. I've assumed a Middle-East reddish brown colour but it's very bold, and I want to tone it down a little to look a bit more sun-bleached. I've not done much in the way of weathering before and would like some suggestions as to how I might achieve this. I have an airbrush, and I have pastels, so use of either has been contemplated, but I'm not sure if a simple blow-over of white, or white pastels will achieve the look I want, or whether that will look like what it is - just a blow-over of white!

Thanks,
Ian

one thing to keep in mind is that different pigments fade differently given exposure to UV. Reds tend to be the most fugitive.

That's half the problem, Bo. Obviously the red and blue on the roundels will also have to be faded!

An overspray of the "Dust" finish from whatever paint line you prefer has always provided a nice faded look for me.  Experiment first though.

Cheers,

Don't whatever you do use straight white. pale sand, grey or pastel shades of whatever colour you are fading will work.

White as you say will look white and false.

Keep it thin keep it subtle and concentrate more on edges than whole panels.

That's my thoughts

Tamiya Buff thinned 80% thinner to 20% paint
Buff does a great job of fading areas. Being frugal with the paint % helps you build up the layers to your desired effect... Simples!

Good luck

Gentlemen, thank you for your suggestions! I will experiment and update the build log with the results.
