Roden 1/72 Nieuport 24 and 24bis
« on: February 18, 2014, 04:04:47 AM »
For the important anniversary I have built these two Roden kits, and here I'm going to present a little digest of the build log...
Roden's level of detailing is good, as always, and, unlike my previous Roden builds, I didn't have any problem and these two went together exceptionally well, with just a few regular issues on the way... Simply, a joy to build

Both were built in Serbian markings:

The only noticeable problem was with decals, which were out of register and a bit blurred, but Roden came to the rescue by sending me spare set - thumbs up for the service!

Details in the cockpit - seats are copied from Part's PE fret to Nescafe foil, belts are made from Tamiya tape and steel wire, and fuselage panels, which are visible from the inside, are copied to a thin alu-foil and glued from the inside:

Important note for those who're going to build this model - first check wings-to-fuselage joint, and only afterwards attach cockpit parts to lower wing... I had problems because I did it vice-versa :-\, so had to detach everything and reattach after fitting...

The last view on interior before joining fuselage sides. The last pic shows minimal amount of filling using Vallejo acrylic putty:

Next step was painting: mixture of Vallejo Light Gray, Metal Medium (3:1) and water as needed.

Additionally, I painted wooden parts using lighter mixture (2:1) of same paints. Result is subtle, yet visible:

Decals for 24bis were pretty bad, while ones for 24 were OK - here you can see the cracks...
These were touched up with paint and everything was mat-coated using Vallejo spray:

Attaching upper wings was easy - first cabane, and then interplane struts:

Rigging was also straight forward, except that I mounted landing gear in later stage, and then the last cables that attach to it:

At the end, last details were added (wheels, engine, mirror, a bit of weathering on the fuselage underside), and both were finished:

Brilliant - many thanks for showing us your work on this, loads of useful tips!
I intend on doing a pair myself, the 24 and the 27.
