SE5A Roden 1/48th scale
« on: February 02, 2014, 08:44:39 PM »
Roden's SE in the oft modeled/illustrated markings of Captain G H Lewis' D3540 "The Artful Dodger". I used an old Aviprint sheet for the squadron markings and numbers, the roundels & fin stripes came from Pheon and the Artful Dodger nameplate printed off my computer in the smallest font.
I used some of the P.E. from Part, but like most of Part's etch I find that there's a lot that I don't need and a lot I could do with that's not included.
References from the usual sources Windsock, Osprey and the like, but for sheer wealth of detail you can't beat Jamo's photos of the TVAL replica. There's stuff there no manufacturer has ever put in their kits, and that includes WNW.
As for references specific to this a/c, the photo of D3540 with Lewis sitting in the cockpit is reproduced in dozens of WW1 books but the only other view I could find was in Lewis' book "Wings Over the Somme".

Last but not least I must mention Windsock vol.28, no.4 where Lance Krieg shows us what can really be done with this kit.

Two "progress pics" the cockpit,

and this showing my attempts to simulate wrinkles on the fuselage sides and a thicker cockpit coaming using milliput and the icing-on-the-cake for me in this build HGW's decal rib tapes:

Thanks for looking.

Brez, this is an awsome build in 1/48. Your interior is beautiful as is your rigging and weathering. Many congratulations!

Kind regards
Patrick

Lovely work Brez and I know from painful experience that it's not the easiest of builds.

Best wishes

Wow, Brez, that's a great looking build! The SE5a doesn't look so simple after seeing your detail. Thanks for posting.

She's absolutely stunning, Tony!  Classic "Brez".  Your cockpit looks amazing with all the additional goodies you've added.  The rib tapes are a nice touch and they look fantastic.  I'll be using those on an Eduard Tripe that I've just started.  Are there any issues I need to look out for in applying them?
Cheers,
Bud

Thank-you guys for your kind comments, they're very much appreciated and I'm glad that you like her.

They really are a great product Bud, I'll definitely be using them again. You can't see from my photos (I don't think my camera is man enough for the task), but close-up the effect is very subtle and, to my mind, convincing. The raised detail shows through not just the paint-work but the decals as well, although they are Pheon so nice and thin. I followed the instructions and had no problems, you have to wait 20 minutes or so until you peel off the covering film.
Looking forward to seeing your work on the tripe.
Cheers,
Tony.

Hello Tony:

Outstanding workmanship!  I like your "honey toned" wood for the interior. All the goodies in there really add to the cockpit.  This is a neat scheme and you did a great job on the model.

Best

what a nice little se5a brez. do you have any photos where we can see the effect of the hgw ribtapes under the paint? one of my many projects is a roden se5a that i'm tricking out by adding an engine, wing pulleys as well as other details and i thought about these things, just havent seen them used in 1/48 b4.
