rigging batons

Rigging batons are a feature in eg the Hannover and the Fairey Swordfish. i wonder what their purpose is (rigidity/anti vibration???) and how they are fixed to the rigging cables. the photo's i've studied are never clear enough and my Windsock references unfortunately don't contain a detail drawing on this subject. A google search did not help nor did wikipedia contain a lemma. can anyone enlighten me??

 I couldn't tell you how it works on the swordfish, but as for the Hannover there is a pretty good photo on the WNW site where you can work out the arrangement. The cable passes thru a hole near the end of the baton. A clamping screw, threaded into the end of the baton (most likely a simple hollow metal tube) acts in the cable, pinching it against the hole. Simple.
