Hello Andrew:

This is coming along nicely.  You asked about the wrapping on the exhaust.  I am not sure I like it.  I think it looks camouflaged.  If you had a reference for it would be more helpful in giving a better answer.  But, that is just my opinion.  I do like your use of oils for the wood grain and like what you are doing with the engine.  Outstanding workmanship.  What is that tool you are using to make the eyelets?  I also appreciate your explanation and your photo comparison of how you preshade the surface prior to applying the W&W decals to get the desired affect.
Looking forward to more.

Thanks for your comments  :)

Tomorrow I'll post some references for the wrapping.
The tool that I use for the eyelet is  a simple pin, was allready made that way, I've found in a tool box in my father house, so I don't have any idea where it come from...
But I think that is quite easy to do something similar with steel wire.

Hi!

I've joined the fuselage and painted it with oils to finish the wood effect.

I'm quite satisfied !  :D

The cross on the fuselage is painted, not a decal and the red and black parts still needs some washing and drybrush.

( the mg's are not glued, I've placed them only to see the effect..)

Now I'll leave it alone for a week waiting for the oil to dry.
meanwhile I'll work on other parts (spinner, propeller, wings, ecc...)

Best

Andrew

P.s.

Here's a picture of the wrapping for Mark

A little different form mine, but in relal life the difference is not so much, the pictures of the models exagerate the effect. Next time anyway I'll try something different or I'll go for a barracuda resin  ;)

The fuselage is stunning, Andrew.  Wonderful wood effects and the coloured
areas accent them beautifully. Truly admirable work, my friend! I'm looking
forward to the next updates.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Andrew:  Thanks for posting the photo, looking at the photo's, I would say you captured the look rather well.  It almost looks like thread rather than tape or strips of fabric.  Your efforts on the wood are paying off too.  Your wood affect is outstanding.  Looking forward to more.

Thanks for your comment  :)

I think that there were 2 styles of wrapping: one used a tape and another used a thread.
Usually on the models is reproduced the tape one, so I wanted to try something different for my model.

Andrew

The NASM Albatros book describes what they found as "asbestos cord bound with [black colored] tape." This is also what is shown in the 1918 British evaluation report and the AWM D.V. It is what i see in most period photos that show some kind of wrapping. Your museum example may be missing the tape wrapping. I am personally dubious about the ace bandage style as seen on the modern TVAL replicas, I think it is a concession to practicality for a flying replica given what is available nowadays. Of course I could be wrong. :)

Anyway, lovely build Andrew :)

Hi!

While I'm waiting the oil paint to dry I'm working on the smaller bits.

I've weathered the exhaust with oils and pastels (I'll add some rust pigment  around the welds...)
and I've painted and chipped the spinner. Maybe it's a bit overdone, but I'll decide when the plane will be finished, it will not be a big work repaint it.

And a question :

on the left wing of Roland there's what a think is a reinforcement for the pilot to step on while climbing on the cockpit.
The base I think is black, but I can' t decide the color of the strips: metal or wood ? Anyone knows something? Thanks  :)

Andrew

Andrew,
From what I've found to date the answer is metal. I did my Pfalz reinforced "steps" with scrap decal painted in the appropriate colour and will apply some wear/scratches to it when I weather the completed model. Worked well if that's of any help.
Cheers,
Lance
