1/72 Eduard Weekend edition Nieuport 17
« on: January 08, 2014, 06:35:10 PM »
Just staring on this little gem. Everything seems to go  together well on a dry fit so far although the options for  the wings and engine nacelles seems a bit vague. Also can't get my head around the recommendation for aluminium for the main colour other than the top of the wings. I keep thinking  of F86 Sabres  :)

It's a nice kit. I finished a combo pack just before Christmas.

My brainwave of pre-rigging hasn't proved to be   a success as the  rigging keeps  getting in the way.
Still nothing ventured as the saying goes.

Your paintwork looks great Toby. I like the Nieuports very much and will certainly follow your build.

Kind regards
Patrick

Hello Toby. It's coming on very nicely.

I don't think there's anything wrong at all with your brainwave in principle; it's certainly how I proceed once key painting is completed. You're right that the rigging can get in the way, but I resolve this (as I think others do) by using small pieces of masking tape to keep them safely tucked out of the way. If you can imagine the rigging complications on a Brisfit, the upper surface of the top wing, the bottom surface of the lower wing and the top of the rear fuselage were covered with little pieces of tape, but it all worked in the end for me.

Best wishes
Nigel

Very nice start, Toby!  I agree with Nigel.  It's not bad idea to rig the hard to reach areas before the top wing goes on.  Tape is the answer.
Cheers,
Bud

That's a good start, Toby.  I stand in awe of 1/72 modellers- I couldn't do 1/72 kits when I was young and though I had good vision.

Cheers.

Nice work so far Toby!
I find that the only areas that need to be pre-rigged (one end of the rigging wire only of course!) are those that will be extremely difficult to reach or attach accurately when it is all together - ie: the fuselage/cabane wires, around the engines on multi-engined aircraft, or where rigging wires coincide with joints in the parts (such as the joints of the lower wings/centre section on an Albatros where it is much easier to add the wires, then join the wings to the centre section). The rest is much better done after the assembly.

Thanks for the kind words so far. I have now used some tape to stop the the offending rigging from flopping about but next time I'll only pre-rig where there is no viable alternative.  Updates to follow.

Now the fun starts. I think I'll have a large whisky to steady the nerves :o

It's coming along very nicely, Toby.  No need for whiskey, mate, you've got it nailed.

Cheers.
