Hi Nigel - Yes, I took these photos at Colindale. Though some may correctly say its located at Hendon, it's a lot closer to walk to the RAF Museum from Colindale Tube station than from Hendon Central (fortunately, I didn't find this out the hard way!).
There's also a good example of an M1C in the Shuttleworth collection which I photographed, but considered the image quality too poor to post. I believe some very good images of this plane have already been posted by a forum member together with the RAF M1C.
I've no idea why the RFC and RNAS painted the wings in this manner, perhaps it was simply standard practice - or perhaps the outline of a plane is easier to pick up from above if the colour of the upper surface is not extended over the edges?
