Jacob's Fokker Dr.I
« on: December 24, 2013, 05:19:43 AM »
Just for the record! I really feel a bit humble about showing you this, added today to my nephew's collection. Let's just say it emphasises the high standard of RHallinger's recent excellent Dr.I.
Sorry about the photography - I forgot to make a record of the scene before I encased it. I know it's a much modelled machine, but it was my choice partly because the all black scheme is so striking, but mainly because I'm endeavouring to provide my nephew with a good spread of pilot's stories, so to speak, and Jacobs was of course one of the most notable pilots, not to mention perhaps the prime exponent of the Dr.I.

A couple more.

Roden's kit builds quite well overall. In fact as far as wing alignment is concerned, it's a stroll compared with their 1/72 kit.
One problem area was the cockpit. Largely my fault, but the tension always rises when one tries to get all the bits and pieces together for joining the fuselage  halves. I really must take more time scrutinising the instructions, not entirely clear. Another exasperating area was the decals. In the past I haven't had as much difficulty with Roden decals as some seem to have, but on this occasion I did experience a fair amount of fragmentation, hence some unclean edges to white shapes.

Two more. That's it, honest!

The black is Tamiya NATO black, which works quite well for me as 'scale black', darkening up a bit of course after a layer of Future/Klear/Pledge and a final spray of varnish.
Why the cows? Why not? I simply like adding some life to these vignettes. If someone decides to model Jacobs himself in 1/32, I'll consider opening up the case and sticking him in.

Hi Mark:

I really like this scheme and you did an excellent job on the model, decal fragmentation notwithstanding.  The setting is neat, and I like the addition of cattle!  Not sure why, but it is neat.

Best

Very nicely done Mark. I like the scene very much.

There was a german pilot (don't remember his name though, sorry) that once milk a cow from a farm that was nearby the aerodrome and shared the milk with his fellow pilots.

I guess that your planting the roots for a future modeler Mark and I bet that your nephew will enjoy those stories very much.

Cheers

Wonderful Mark, I like your color very much. It's a nice build and I understand why the cows are looking with quite some admiration!

Kind regards
Patrick

Lovely Dr.I, Mark!  Excellent choice of scheme.  The NATO black would've been my choice, as well.  Lends itself to tonal variations nicely.
Brilliant work, mate.
Cheers,
Bud

Very nice work Mark, on one of my favorite DR.1 schemes.  ;D  I hope that when I eventually get around to Jacob's Dr.I (it's on my top 25 build list!), mine turns out as well as your's.  :)  Very well done.

Christmas Cheers,

Bob

Thanks for the comments, it looks quite pretty now on display. The cows have gone down well - nice story about the milking, Zabu!
Good point about the tonal variations Bud, I must admit that so far I only get those  by accident. Before long I will summon up the nerve for deliberate weathering etc. Next up on the blocks: probably Collishaw's Triplane (single gun).

And I would like to report that Christmas Day was concluded with a very late night showing of The Blue Max. Haven't watched this for a very long time. Now I realise that the true star of the film isn't George Peppard, let alone Jeremy Kemp or Ursula Andress, but James Mason. What a performance! Right down to that superb ending...

I really like the Jacob's scheme and the cows look great - a great little diorama.  Funny enough I  added a cow to my own Dva diorama a few months back.

cheers
