New work - 139 Sq Bristol F2b
« on: December 04, 2013, 04:05:06 AM »
This is a portrait of the Bristol F2b. The Bristol Fighter was a maneuverable, heavily armed two-seater biplane, and one of the most successful fighters of the war. It got off to a poor start during "Bloody April" when it was introduced to the Western Front by the inexperienced pilots. Believing that the aircraft was structurally weak, pilots avoided violent maneuvers during combat. It was soon realized, however, that the Bristol fighter was actually a very sturdy aircraft that could be maneuvered as if it were a single seat fighter with rear protection. Bristol crews met with great success by using their aircraft in that capacity. By the end of the war over 240 pilots and gunners achieved ace status in the type. This particular Bristol served with 139 Sq RAF in Italy. While visiting in New Zealand in 2009 I had the opportunity to ride in a Bristol F2b carrying the same markings.

I really like the way you work with lighting, again on this painting. The feeling of an early morning flight (or a late in the evening on) is transferred well.

I am looking forward to your next painting - maybe restarting the Immelmann idea?

Thanks Bob and Stefan.

Stefan, the next piece whcih I will be featuring will be the Josef Jacobs God of the North Wind painting which I have been working on. The painting is finished and I am doing a little post-production on the photos so that I can post them online. I am almost finished with that and should have final shots up by the end of the week.

As for Immelmann, I very much want to get back on that project. Unfortunately the past year had me busy with other commitments and I have been unable to devote any more time to it. Hopefully soon I'll be able to find some time....

Russell, have you seen the Monty Python film 'The Life of Brian'? If so, you're a "very naughty boy"!  The  Brisfit is my favourite airplane. Maybe we're talking here about Christmas 2014 if I can persuade my better half!

Best wishes

Hi Nigel.

Another master piece there. It's amazing how you can put up the little details like the wrinkles on the fabric near the from under cooling and the reflex of the struts in the upper wing.

I also like the way that light goes into the scene and how the crew it's watching to diferent sides complementing each other... very nice indeed.

I bet that in the real painting there's much more to see. Thanks for posting.

Cheers
