Futures and Mr Mark Softer.
« on: November 20, 2013, 01:42:43 PM »
I painted the wings of my model with Futures prior to decal application. I waited overnight then painted the surface with Mr Mark Softer then applied the decals, the decals sucked down really well but after a short time the Futures turned white where the Mr Mark Softer was applied. I dried the decal with a hair dryer but the finished job looked pretty crappy because of the white, so I repainted the area with more Futures, the white disappeared just like magic. I waited overnight then sprayed the entire wing with Humbrol Matt Clear. Is this a normal reaction of Mr Mark Softer with Futures?

I've heard of this before. I use Micro Sol & Micro Set; one of them (forget which, duh, I think it is 'Set') will do the same thing if you slop it on too heavily but the cloudiness goes away after it dries again... At least that is what I've experienced...

I have never had an issue with Mr Mark Softer but this is the first time I used it over Futures, and even after it had dried for several hours the white didn't go away, luckily a second coat of Futures rectified the problem.

The problem is that Future takes some time to fully cure. Need to wait a couple of days, even though it is dry to the touch within a fairly short time.

I also use Micro set & sol without a problem...as yet.  James is right, it takes
quite a while for the Future to completely cure.

Ernie :)

The instructions on the bottle say that it is dry within 20 - 30 minutes after which time a second coat can be applied. If I have to wait two to three days for it to fully cure I may as well stick with my Humbrol Gloss Varnish No.35 for a gloss finish before decal application, it only takes overnight to dry. I hear of so many people using Furures before decal application, do they all wait two days before applying their decals?

I usually use Future as a pre-decal coat, and wait about 24 hours.  I have noticed that MicroSet will turn the future white, no matter how long I've let it set up, but it goes away when dry.  I usually use MicroSet/Sol, and Solvaset when I need the big guns, and have had no issues with the Future remaining white after applying.  MicroSet smells just like white vinegar to me, I'm not sure if there is anything else in it, but white vinegar is recommended to clean up Future, so maybe to much reacts poorly.

Thanks Brian for your comments, nice to know that I'm not the only one having the "white" issue. I have heard from other people about MicroSet smelling like vinegar, vinegar is very acidic so maybe that's the reason why it reacts with futures, on the other hand Mr Mark softer has little to no odour.

i have also had future turn white under different circumstances. alcohol does it too. i made a wash with india ink and used ethanol to thin the mix and it did the white /fouling of the future. as well as if i do an oil paint wash using mineral spirits or enamel paint thinner it has done it, also a few other random times with different treatments. when dry i coat with future again and it disappears. i think somehow acid or strong solvent must somehow break down the future. all i know is another clear coat fixes it.

Even though the issue was quite easy to rectify it still doesn't make it any less scary when things like that happen.
