Roden 1/48 scale Fokker D.VII (OAW), Kurt Monnington, Jasta 18
« on: November 16, 2013, 06:37:23 AM »
This has got to be one of the fastest builds I have ever done.  Almost exactly 30 days from start to finish and, in spite of all of the fit issues, a real blast.  I used the fantastic Pheon Jasta 18 sheet and I highly recommend it to anyone doing a Fokker D.VII or an Albatros D.V or D.Va.  I also used Wood & Wire's translucent 4 color lozenge for the undersides of the wings.  They went on brilliantly and I love the look.  I used the Master barrels for the Spandaus for the first time and they were much easier to use than I thought they would be.  Finally, I used the excellent Gaspatch air speed indicator.  It looks just a tiny bit oversized to me, but I like the way it looks.

Thanks for hangin' out with me, guys!
Cheers,
Bud

What a little beauty, Bud  ;)
Love the shading on the red and the loz looks sweet - well done!

Thanks, Bob!  I think that without the shading and weathering, the red and white scheme would've looked just too festive for a war bird.
Cheers,
Bud

Well, thanks, Des, Bob and Guy!  I'm deeply flattered that 3 such artists as yourselves would find this quick little knock-up worthy of praise.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud,

Truly beautiful workmanship - each one of your models seems to to better each time - wonderful DVII model with a striking colour/marking scheme as well.

Come on mate, when are you going to start work on one of your larger scale (WNW) kits?

Regards

Dave

Thank you, Dave!  I was never much of a fan of the Fokker D.VII.  No rigging.  I love rigging.  But building this one made me appreciate them for their varied and colorful schemes.  As for the WNW kits in my stash? Well, I...ahh....ummm...as soon as...ummm...
Cheers,
Bud

Striking scheme. A beautiful model all around. Fine shading, too. I just wanted to ask you, how did you shade the Wood and Wire losenge? Is it preshading as they suggest in the instruction or is it postshading (just a tiny bit overdone, to my taste)?

Thanks, Prez!  I'm so glad that you found the shading of the lozenge only just a tiny bit overdone.  I thought it was more overdone than that.  Unfortunately, I post-shaded and it's hard to gauge how much is too much and what is too little over lozenge.  Next time, I'll pre-shade.  I've always had better results that way.
Cheers,
Bud

What a great looking model! I must admit the red/white scheme has never appealed to me before, but your interpretation of it is quite compelling.

Thanks, Rob!  I felt the same way until I saw the cover art for Osprey's Jasta 18 book.  It was the artist, Mark Postlethwaite's interpretation I tried to copy.
