Albatros D.II reproduction operated by The Vintage Aviator Ltd
« on: November 11, 2013, 06:37:47 PM »
This gorgeous reproduction Albatros D.II had its public debut at TVAL's Remembrance Day airshow last Saturday. It was built by Koloman Mayrhofer and his talented team at CraftLab. TVAL covered the flying surfaces and fitted the engine, which I believe is a new build Mercedes D.IIIa 180 hp. What a sight, three Albatros flying together!

Click on the images to see them full size

Here are some close-ups I managed to get from the walkaround access at the show

I hope to get some cockpit shots on a return visit to the TVAL hangar in the near future.

Isn't it a cracker?

I will have some more photos from the air show uploaded shortly

Cheers
James

Thanks very much James for the brilliant photos, and the new addition to the fleet is superb, what a beautiful aeroplane, as are all of the TVAL aircraft.

Those are some amazing photos, James. Thank you so much for sharing. That must've been some sight seeing this in flight.

Does this mean Wingnut may do an Albatros D.II?

Thanks for the photos, they're great!!! Will definitely come in handy when I get to building the D. II and D. I. I noticed the fairings on the lower wing are made out of wood. I know there was some discussion awhile ago in the forum whether if they were wood or metal. I guess now we can say they are made of wood. Thanks again.

I returned to Hood Aerodrome today, taking full advantage of TVAL's generous Open Hangar weekends to take some close up shots of the Albatros D.II

Here is a selection

The white card fitted over the fuel switches is an English translation of the German placards for the Kiwi pilots.

I haven't seen this sort of seat before

The engine fitted is a later model of Mercedes than would have been fitted to an original D.II but hey, looks and sounds fantastic!

Check out the prop lamination detail

Inspire anyone to build the Roden or Encore kit?

What a lovely way to pass a spring afternoon. There is a retired chap, Scott, who is a volunteer who takes visitors on a guided tour of the aeroplanes in the hangar. What a dream job for retirement weekends  8)

Cheers
