I just went back and had another look at the wings and that amazing translucent effect you achieved.  Wow!  Eye candy of the first order.

Congratulations on a very convincing and very beautiful model. I really like the CDL wings. Impressive wooden finish, stunning spoked wheels.

It took a little longer to land this one that originally planned.  It’s always a great day for me when I can offer some photos and make a contribution to the forum.  I’m pleased you’re enjoying the Roland; this is a great WNW kit.

Build log:  Hmmmm, one day Captain Gisbod, one day!

Wood: you all know how to do this.  My take on the wood issue is to use several Conte powders, rubbed into a matt varnish which covers the base coat of Afrika brown.  I spray enamel paints, which are burnished with a cotton bud between layers and sealed with brush painted floor polish.  The trick is to only use artist quality oil paints (finer ground pigments) and Art Spectrum Liquol (No 4 Medium).  Liquol lets the oils flow, acts as a drying agent and allows the underlying colours to glow through the layers.

Also don’t forget to use the translucent type of oil paints.  I’m a bad airbrush painter so burnishing and tickling my paint jobs (1200 carbide paper) helps.  It’s the Conte chalks between layers of matt varnish and gloss floor polish that makes the difference.  Most modellers seem to use chalks/conte to finish models for subtle effects.  I reckon this is good but Contes can also be used as we layer-up prior to decaling.  The trick is to apply them onto a surface that has some tooth, then fix them with a light matt varnish and then apply floor polish before going on to the next step.  Go one shade lighter and darker than your painted base coat colour and work the surface gently with wet and dry sandpaper (800 & 1200).  That’s when you’ll get a painted surface coming to life.

Now you know all my secrets.

We sequence the build, the finishes are all about layering the pigments.

Very impressive model, at least it seems so. Wood, linen and spoked wheels are top notch.

However, I am sorry, but, well, these fine photos are not fully to my taste. They are certainly artistic, but I as a spectator at the modelling forum I would prefer, for instance, such a cropped version to focus on the subject, not on the background:


Thanks for a couple of  close-ups, but some more would be very much welcome, too - cockpit zone, tail, engine... WNW kits call for them loudly.

   WOW, just plain WOW! An absolute pleasure to view, and the photos will be consulted in detail when mine makes it out of the Stash, probably sooner now that I've seen this one. As for the wheels...............I had originally thought I'd use them only on an Eindecker; so much for resolve!
