Away for one week touring the Highlands
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:24:56 PM »
Hello all,
I will be away from the buckle factory for one week starting this Saturday.   :D
My destination being the stunning West Coast of Scotland and her highlands. Highlands of Canada, New Zealand, USA and Asia aside, the Scottish Highlands must rank as one of the most beautiful places on earth, and one I can't wait to be reacquainted with.

I ride up to Moffat on the Saturday for one night and then on through Glasgow, Stirling, Glen Coe (my ashes will be cast on Glen Coe's soil  ;) ) and onto Fort William, where I stay for 4 to 5 days. Total miles from London to Fort William being around 520+.

The BBC weather man on the radio speaks of the first Autumn storms hitting land this Sunday and guess where they impact in a big way?! Yep, the west coast of Scotland! It's going to be a scary ride with 70MPH winds battering my poor 300cc scoot & I, but go on we must!

Wish me luck.... I may need it!
Cheers,
Von steadfast   ;)

Best of luck, Bob! Have a wonderful holiday and don't forget to ...ahem
"buckle up"! ;) ;D   Sorry, couldn't resist it. :-[
I don't think I've seen the Von Buckle tartan. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

"von Scootermann"
I did 11 days there this past early May; it is an experience I will never forget. Magnificent beyond description, wonderful people and a very "comfortable" place to be. I 'd go back in an instant; other then staying on the correct side of the roads it was great, you should be OK with that part!
Enjoy, be safe, and have a wee pint (two if the feeling moves you!) of Belhaven's Best for me.
Cheers,
Lance

Have a wonderful and, no doubt, well deserved break Bob. It is indeed a beautiful part of the world, just mind out for those midges!

Best wishes
Nigel

I visited Fort William in 1976 while on leave from the US Army in Germany. I don't recall my motivation to  make the trip, but I vividly remember the raw beauty of the place.

We got lucky, not a Midge seen; the big concern however were the Highland Ticks, lot's of cautions issued but nary one of those to be found either. The "Feral Goats" of St Fillan's were a more sobering concern in my view!
Cheers,
Lance

Forget all the above! I cancelled the trip tonight.  :-[
High winds and rain are due to batter the West coast on Sunday and Monday and I don't want to be out in it when it comes.
I will look to go in Springtime next year.

Back to buckling!  :o

That's a shame, Bob.  Sometime mother nature has her own agenda.
Delayed or not, when you do get up there it will be worth the wait.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hi Ernie,
I never tire of riding through the Highlands, I just want to do it safely and in one piece  :D
Hopefully I will have a bigger bike come the Springtime, one that will give me more protection and comfort.... hope!

Cheers!
Bob

Sad that you had to cancel Bob. On the brighter side you provided me the opportunity to recall how much I enjoyed being there, hard to believe it was less then 4 months ago! I hope to go back one day as, like most visits, there's never enough time to see and do all one would like to. We did it as little like tourists as possible, rented a small car, travelled on our own schedule, and avoided the commercialised spots as much as possible. Incredible visit.
Cheers,
Lance
