1/32 Decals for Jasta 18 Fokker DVII fighters
From Pheon Decals

First Look review by James Fahey

The latest decal release from Pheon Decals is for Fokker DVII aircraft in service with Jasta 18 ‘Raben’s Ravens’ to fit the Wingnut Wings kits #32030 OAW and #32027 Albatros versions. There are markings for 11 aircraft - 3 OAW versions, 7 Albatros versions and a single Fokker DRI

Option 1: Early OAW-built, Lt Kurt Monnington. Raven and skull/crossbones with black edging on the fuselage. Note this black edging is provided as decals.

Option 2: OAW-built, Ltn August Raben. White raven

Option 3: OAW-built, Ltn Heinz Kustner, raven & 3-pointed star, black chevrons on tail

Option 4: Albatros-built, Ltn Gunther von Buren, raven with chicks

Option 5: Albatros-built, Ltn Hans Muller raven & black sloping bars

Option 6: Albatros-built, pilot unknown. Raven & fuselage chevron

Option 7: subcontractor unknown.

Option 8: Albatros-built, Ltn Wilhelm Kuhne. Raven & dashed black band

Option 9: OAW-built, possible Vzfw Glatz, raven & red bands on fuselage. These are not provided as decals to ensure you get a perfect colour match with the forward fuselage colour.

Option 10: OAW-built pilot unknown. Green or blue fuselage edging (not known conclusively).

Option 11: Fokker Dr.I Ltn August Raben. Intended for the Roden kit

Make sure you use the correct Fokker DVII kit for the markings option you intend to build.

Options 9, 10 & 11 do not have actually use any specific decals, just the raven markings and bands which will need to to be masked and painted by the modeller. This would be a straightforward job which Pheon have made easier by the provision of tailored paper templates.

Jasta 18’s red and white livery is discussed in the instruction booklet, including over-painting of the wing camouflage fabric with red on upper and lower surfaces. Some aspects of this are not conclusive and Pheon set out their conclusions based on a balance of factors.

Things I liked

The instruction booklet is a gem, as we have come to expect from Pheon. Five pages of background history concerning Jasta 18, comprehensive reference list, discussion of Jasta 18 colour scheme, notes on pilots and markings. Pheon’s research gives modellers everything they need for historical accuracy.

Inclusion of modifications to WNW kit nose panels needed for historical accuracy. Pheon provide some very clear diagrams and photos to help modellers with the minor alterations needed on all the Jasta 18 Fokker DVII options in the set.

The white decals for the four white ravens and the reverse chevron for option 6 are double printed in white to ensure no colour bleed through from the base red and black colours.

Number of markings options provided in the set is excellent. Note that there is no significant scope to reduce the cost by providing fewer options due to the economics of decal printing. This means more choice for finishing your model in a scheme that appeals to you.

Things that could have been improved

It is a lovely decal set and it could have been even better if the edging for options 9 & 10 had been included as decals. But the decal sheet is chock full already. If you can’t mask a straight line then this set is not for you. [Wink]

The red colour on the decal placement guides in the review set isn’t quite right for Jasta 18. It should be a vermillion red as you can see from the cover of the Osprey book.

Conclusion

Jasta 18 makes a very attractive choice for after-market decals; the red/white/black markings are strikingly colourful and interesting. A great selection of markings to choose from. Overall this is a high quality decal set, well researched and printed.

Thanks to Pheon Decals for the review samples.
