Sanke Cards

I have a small but growing collection of Sanke Cards.  In order to display them I purchased an inexpensive but nice frame and had a custom matt cut for it (the cards are close but do not quite fit a 3X5 opening).  I can display three and since they are not permanently framed, I can easily rotate them every so often.

Hi Rob,

I'm not sure if Kreston obtains his Sanke cards from the same source, but I have bought quite a few from eBay.  Apart from my initial collection, which I purchased from an early pilot who told me, and other researchers that he flew WW1 aeroplanes (there is a small group of us who believe that this was possibly after the war, or during the peace keeping operations if at all) I buy almost all of my photos and pieces of aeroplanes, etc from eBay.  Occasionally I found some very interesting items such as a Hythe camera gun and some WW1 Australian Light Horse glass plate negatives in antique shops.  I have heard of quite a few propellers which have been offered for sale, but I always seem to hear about them a few weeks or a few months after they have been sold!  >:(

I get some of my cards from eBay sellers and others from collectors thinning out their doubles.  If I don't know an eBay seller I usually pepper them with questions and ask for photos of the backs of the cards if they are not posted.

I just received an original Sanke card, number 363, as I was typing a reply to another thread!  It is of Hauptmann Boelke, and I have a few others but I don't know which ones I have or where they are.  I have a lot of cataloguing ahead of me!

You won't be disappointed with eBay Rob.  It's up to you but I often also go to the German eBay site.  That's where you find the really nice German photos but it has some subtle differences to the English speaking sites, and of course everything is in German!

I have a question for you Kreston.  This Sanke card has a black border, of about 3 or 4 mm.  I don't recall ever having seen this before on a Sanke card.  Have you ever seen this before?  I am convinced that it is genuine, since it has the distinctive Sanke triangular logo on the rear, contemporary writing and has been mailed.  I will be very interested to hear about this!

David, none of mine have the thin black border.  I am wondering if your 363 card has the small white cross after Boelcke's name?  I believe those cards were issued after his death and maybe the black border is present on those.

Thank you very much for the information Kreston!  You've hit the nail on the head!  Yes, it does have the small cross next to his name, and I am sure that you are right, the black border is a sign of respect for the deceased Boelke.  Very much appreciated Kreston!

A prime example is Bo Monroe's Jasta Boelcke build. 8)
