Riveting/Nails question
« on: August 19, 2013, 08:25:26 PM »
Hello,

What's the best way to recreate nails on plywood? I've read on a blog that the HGW Iron nail decals are excellent, but I can't find any reference to this product online?

What do you guys find is best to recreate this effect? Are the HGW black rivets suitable? Or are they raised? Obviously, I want a flat effect for the nail heads..

Thanks

Guy

I tried an earlier nail decal product but didn't like it (can't rem the vendors name, was a one man band type operation) -- nothing wrong with the decals per se but you see as much of the decal strip as you do the nail heads at this scale. Uschi has a new product that might be worth investigating though. He claims the edge of the decal is invisible once you apply the wood decal on top of it.

I think I will stick with what I did on my Alby but more pronounced next time-- pouncing wheel to mark the holes and a hand drill to "enhance" them. Note on an Albatros anyway every third fastener is a screw ;)

A friend of mine had awesome results with the HGW nail decals. They can be tricky and take a little getting use to but with practice the results are awesome. The photo below is 1/32 scale using HGW.

As Bo rightly states Alex at Uschi has just brought out his own version, not seen them used as yet but generally anything Alec produces is first rate.

Either way I would certainly practice on something spare first. Good luck, i look forward to seeing how you get on,

Regards, Martin.

However they are done, they add so much to a "wooden" sheathed model.

Cheers,

You could buy a rivet tool such as the one by Trumpeter, or "rosie the riveter", which come with differant wheels for varying the spacing, then using a wash...

Thanks Ian,

That sounds good too - I'll have to do some experimenting..

I'd recommend the pounce wheel method. Some examples though look very over prominent IMHO. Decals are an easy out & I would look at photo's to see how pronounced the nails are on the craft you are modelling. There seems great variation just as in woodgrains and again it's a matter of personal taste.
