News, bad & good
« on: August 16, 2013, 03:26:45 AM »
Hi everyone,
I've been in a quandry about my 1/48 Camel build, and I have
decided to shelve it indefinately.  I've fought it for some time and
it has turned into not much more than a source of irritation for me,
which is the opposite of why I want to make models to start with.
The big thing for me right now is I've finally switched from 1/48
to the much easier on the eyes and fumbley fingers 1/32 scale.
I have been reading that a good model to start my foray with is
a Nieuport 17, which I am going to do.  I have an Academy model
to get my feet wet in the new scale, and while not a complicated one,
I agree it will be a good starting point.
I apologize for not getting the Camel finished, but I can't afford to lose
many more hairs. ;D
So there I am right now.  I will post some pictures of my maiden voyage
in the next few days.  Like they say, onward and upward. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

No shame in that, Ernie.  At least I hope not.  I've shelved more than one project when they proved too vexing for my increasingly feeble eyes, fingers and brain.  My latest is an Eduard SPAD XIII with similar fit issues to their Camel.  These hanger queens do eventually resurface when I become reinspired.  Maybe your Camel will call to you again someday.  In the meantime, I look forward to seeing your Nieuport unfold.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello Ernie:

No shame in that.  I have several I have put away until I get the motivation to go back to them.  The Academy 17 is not without its' own set of challenges.  It does build into a decent kit; but depending on how far you want to detail it, it can present challenges.  Good luck with it and enjoy it.

Best

Ernie, I have the same Academy kit, maybe there are soome incorrect details, but if you don't examine it with a caliper it's OK.
Useless to say I will follow your build with a great interest.
I bought some Master Caster detailing set (cowling, wheels and cockpit).

If you want some inspiration, here is a WIP of an Italian Master class modeler:

Go on and just have fun, don't worry of uncompleted projects.....Ciao

Ernie,
Congratulations on your, IMHO, very wise choice. I did the same two years back, and have absolutely no regrets, in fact just the opposite. Most important, your first para says it all, if you're not having fun something is wrong and age may, like with me, dictate the positioning of the "green zone" on your Fun Meter.
So, welcome to the "Older Boys Club" of the bigger Scale, I'm personally having a bloody ball here compared to the latter part of the previous phase, and wish I'd switched sooner!
Cheers,
Lance ;)

Thanks everyone for the support.  I am pleased with the little I've done so far...
finding it's easier to do things I want regarding detailing, etc.  I have gotten a set of
Tom's detail parts for the Nieuport, and have ordered the Mastercaster's new cowling
and wheel set.
While I'm on the subject, would anyone know where the compass on a N.17 would be?
I don't think it is on the cockpit floor, but can't for the life of me figure where it is.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Speculative, but plausible -- here is the layout per RoF:

Thanks Bo, that will be a great help.  Proper pictures of a N.17 cockpit interior
are scarce as hen's teeth. ;)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ernie, as the others have said its a good thing you have done in deciding to move on with a new project. If your heart is not 100% in something its best to box it up for another day and start something new.

My eyes are suffering these days and although I have a few 1/48 kits in the stash 1/32 is the way ahead for me.

Wishing you lots of luck and joy in the new project, looking forward to seeing pics.

Regards,

Martin.

Ernie,

I built an Eduard Nieuport 17 a few years ago and found these images to be very useful:

Martin, thanks so much for the encouragement.  Since I made the decision,
I found it liberating, a breath of fresh air.

Rob, Thanks very much!  That will be a great help.

Yes indeed, keeping the fun in the hobby is what it's all about. When I find that building biplanes become a bit of a burden I change gears to an AFV or a WWII aircraft.

Cheers,

Chris
You can have it good; You can have it fast; you can have it cheap. Pick any two, but all three are impossible.
