WnW Junkers J1 build advice please
« on: May 04, 2012, 10:06:34 AM »
Hi all,
I have had a 20 year hiatus from serious modelling and I am getting back into the hobby with some WWI builds that got me into it in the first place.
I have WnW Junkers J1 - totally gobsmacked at the quality of the kit and how much kits have moved on!!! And want to take my time and get my skills back up to speed.
I am unpacking the kit and looking over parts - I have noticed there seems to be a small gap between the upper flaps and the upper wing that I don't think was there in reality, hopefully easily fixed with some evergreen strips.
I have brought some cockpit placard decals to add a bit of color to the pit.
But I was wondering if anybody could recomend any aftermarket bits and pieces i could also use.
Thank you for your time
Cz

Cz,
Click on the red banner above. This will take you to Des' site. Down the left hand
side you will see a build log for the J1. There will be some great tips in the log. Well,
worth the read!

If you want the micro fiber seat belts, HGW. I'd recomend master barrels Parabellum for the MG, and Radus (RB Prod.) PE turnbuckles.  Everything else is in Des's build log.

The Des build is the best reference available.

Hi

There was a resin replacement to replace/correct this issue (can´t remember the manufacturer´s name  :-\) but I think that it is no longer available.

Hope this helps a bit.

I got my correction parts from a gent that was on Aerodrome. All he asked for was shipping cost.

Hi CZ,

You asked for advice, so I'll mention how I got driven to distraction. This was my first 1/32 kit and my first WW I kit.  By the time I got the the tail end of the build -- attaching the upper wing -- I thought that I'd learned all my lessons about the genre.  Was I ever wrong! With the positive experience of how well the parts fit, I thought that it would be snap to just attach the struts to the lower wings, flip everything upside down and just drop fit the body to the upper wing.  That seemed to work for the outer set of struts (which naively assumed would line everything up properly) but when I got to the three dimensional puzzle of strutwork  at the wing-body join, nothing was anywhere near where it should have been.  I mean REALLY off! I finally got everything somewhat straightened out by tearing everything apart, it is really not what it should be. Perhaps the way to approach the problem would have been to start with the radically angled struts near the body and glue nothing until everything fit as it should, but I don't really know. It seemed like there was a lot of weight being cantilevered  around whilstI  fiddled with the struts.  I'd be happy to see the wisdom of others offered up to this problem.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I'm not at that point yet. Had to stop and buy some .05mm tube for rigging. When the tail is rigged, I'll move on.

i like to build a rudimentary jig from whatever is lying around, paint bottles, stacks of coins or cd cases to get everything in a secure position and i usually start with the cabanes. once they are dryed well and strait i procede to the outer interplanes. now i know a j.i is a bit diff because the struts are at a radical angle but if you make something to hold the top wing in place you can manipulate the struts while the plastic cement is still allowing you to shift things get it all lined up and let dry. next add other struts . i used to glue all the struts on and throw the top wing on and watch the top wing dance the twist. i like having the center section solid before i work my way outward from center. but every biplane modeller has his/her own way.

Just like Albi said: use a jig of something or other to hold the upper wing in place while you attach the struts. I attached them in "pairs:" first one on one side, then the matching strut on the other.  Then move on to the next "pair." IIRC, I attached the "fuselage to lower wing" struts first, then the outer four interplane struts, then the four "inside" interplane struts. Watch these four "inside" interplane struts, as they cross each other on both sides. Do a dry-fit first, just to be sure that they all line up. Also, best if you jack up the tail onto something so that the model sits level. Worked all right for me:

Good luck with your build. Don't forget to post a few photos when you're done!  :)
Cheers!
