WNW D.VIIF Just but a little different
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:20:39 AM »
I've been quiet but busy. Like many of us life is throwing some challenges our way. I got absorbed with my PT boat build, as expected it turned into a bit of a detail nightmare, far from the OOB build I'd expected. Anyway enough of floaty things.

This was a birthday pressie of SWMBO bless her, I'd started using  W&W Lozenge on the fuselage but after a set to with the supplier (Not W&W themselves I must add, Vladimir has been exceptionally helpful & generous) and getting the wing decaling was proved prohibitively expensive (which Vladimir sent FOC to me) I was itching to continue. While overcoating the decaling I did the old *work too long with tired mind fingers and eyes* the next day what I'd done was diabolical so it all had to be stripped to the base coat. Meanwhile Aviattic had sent me my order with some well received extra samples. (TY Richard) so I set about the build using them with plans to use the W&W for my next Fok build.

So what did I do?
Basic mods was the coaming cowl mod to show the lip and kill that *ing seam* Studying pics of Just's aircraft showed no evidence of access panels but clear seams which I replicated as best I could. adding the overlap between the cowl top halves and the lip around the fuel gauge shroud. Thinning the cowls and panels was a time consuming but worthwhile exercise and I recommend it to get a more scale look to the lip around the rad.

Internally the only real mod was to the ammunition chutes which I don't like how WNW portrayed but understand why. I chose a pretty OOB build for the rest of the internals apart from removing one of the control stick throttle levers as I read Fokker only fitted one as opposed to OAW who did the two handle type (probably got that back to front though.

Outside again, I removed one access panel just for no good reason other than the spare on the sprue looked too useful to pass up using. I tried to replicate the sagging sides of the fabric as it's so prominent (would have been a nice optional part WNW as per the SE5a) and while sitting enthroned ;D on my stool of study (the loo) noticed the odd looking panel that seems to lip over behind the side panel. I took this to possible be some attempt at creating a firewall probably an in field mod?

So this is where she stands right now, touch ups, detailing and rigging to go, Not to mention the prop, wish I could afford a wood one but will resort to the tried and tested methods.

Comments, tips and critique always appreciated

The old oak stump presents another winner. Looking spectacular Keith, "easy on the eyes" as Bo has inferred. Anxiously awaiting more updates, she's a real and impressive winner already.

Thanks Guys, mucho appreciated comments.

Richard, I went with the idea the centre section of fabric had been replaced, on the pic in the WNW instructions it looks darker than the outer sections, the end of at least one wing cross is shorter and looks like the paint/dope has been eroded by some method, I guessed at loose fabric flapping around so took it to mean the centre section had been ripped off as was known to happen on occasions as opposed to reinforced. Outer sections of the upper wing, lower wing and fuselage were faded and glazed with Citadel washes and Tensochrom white oxide washes.

Lots of dirtying down still to do. :-)

Keith, the D.VII is a real stunner!  What a gorgeous model, even without
a prop. ;D  I really like the ripples in the lozenge, which I think you pulled
off wonderfully.  Could you tell me what brand of red paint you used...I was
looking for a colour just like that.  Thank you for sharing this model with us,
well done!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Simply outstanding! Those Aviattic decals look perfect and now I'm itching to get mine on my WnW Pfalz D.XII, although we are a little way off from that stage. Aviattic's lozenge decals are now my decals of choice.

What base colour did you use on the plastic before applying the lozenge?

Great build!

cheers

Awesome, Keith!  I love the translucency of the red and white over the lozenge.  And those Aviattic stickers work a treat.
Cheers,

The finish grows on you. It is very subtle and refined.

Cheers guys,  I just couldn't resist the red as opposed to black. It's said Just painted the sash to commemorate him getting the iron cross so it made sense to me at least he would use the tricolour like the medal ribbon and I believe there is a subtle difference in tones on the picture of him sat upon the aircraft which was enough for me to paint the tail to match, the *?* mark in the WNW instructions regarding colour only reinforced my resolve.

Ernie
The red is  Citadel Mephiston Red. It's one of their base colours.

Dave
The base is white Tamiya primer with oil stains added predecalling with mixes of Klear, Citadel Nuln oil and Tensachrom oil on the fuselage. The flying surfaces are just primed in white and buffed. I think it was RB here who suggested a more matt base and it seems to have worked for me.

Apart from the Tamiya rattle can primers she is brush painted. I thinned the red with Klear in various mixes and applied it in thin coats where it was translucent. As I type this I realised I've left the belt feed chutes off.... :o

Many thanks for the base painting info Keith. Much appreciated.

A fellow brush painter!! I'm delighted to see your skills on show. Brush finishes are the best!  :)

Hello Keith:

This is really looking good.  IT is motivating to see these in a finsihed form.  I like the scheme and your handling of the under finish of the lozenge.  Another great build on the old Stump!

Best

Keith,

This is going to be a reference for a future D.VIIF in full lozenge for me. One or two have been there for demonstration in the NL Navy fitted with the orange cockardes.

Lozenge looks fabulous.

Ivo

Great stuff!

I like that translucid red on the tail very much. And you have some subtle weathering from exhaust fumes on the right side of the tail . Gorgeous.
