Nature Calls
« on: July 29, 2013, 12:42:19 PM »
Catchy Title, not at all what you'd expect. Had a stark reminder of the power of old Mother Nature early yesterday. We had a spectacular thunder and lightning storm, thankfully no tornado activity, and in an instant I lost my Wifi Router and (extent of damage to be confirmed) my Desk Top Computer. Needless to say the Surge Protector that the juice passed thru to do all this damage got fried as well. I'm using an old Lap Top presently, and will spend the better part of tomorrow getting components off for estimates or repairs and shopping for the obviously destroyed items.
Been one Hell of a Summer everywhere in this hemisphere; seems that we all have the extremes and then some! Not sure what my point is other then to share misery with others (who by and large in the Weather Department have had a generous measure of their own this year!)
Certainly didn't realise how much I depended on the WWW until I lost it, if only for 36 hours! Nice to be "in contact" again.
Cheers,
Lance ??? ???

Yep I know what you mean Lance
Back on 21 June Wellington had its worst storm in 40 years. At its peak, winds gusting up to 200kmh damaging buildings and tearing trees from the ground. Roofs were lifted from homes. 30,000 residents were without power at one stage. Conditions were so treacherous that some council and power companies stopped their workers from carrying out repairs.

Then a week ago we had a magnitude-6.5 earthquake centred about 40km away. Fortunately it was quite deep so there was only minor damage to some CBD buildings. Panic buying of bottled water and emergency kit supplies including batteries, torches, candles and tinned food followed. My office building was closed for two days while it was assessed for damage (unfortunately I was away on holiday).

Cheers
