Posters of Ernst Udet's post war flying displays
« on: July 27, 2013, 08:22:55 AM »
I am fascinated by the style of German poster art from this period (and on). The images are typically stylised, simple and eyecatching. Here some I have found online:

'Ernst Udet' brand cigarettes were manufactured by Zigarettenfabrik Lessing & Co. in Frankfurt am Main for a number of years.

After the Armistice Ernst Udet and Ritter von Greim performed mock dogfights on weekends for the POW Relief Organization, using surplus aircraft in Bavaria [from Wikipedia]. Looks like a Fokker DVIII

Poster was designed by Ernst Höber in 1927

Poster is circa 1922

This poster was designed by Siegmund von Suchodolski in 1928 and features a U12 Flamingo produced by Udet-Flugzeugbau (and later by BFW when the company folded):

Here is a photo of the same aircraft:

The U 12 proved extremely popular and sold well, due in no small part to Ernst Udet's spectacular aerobatics routines while flying the aircraft. One particularly acclaimed part of his act included swooping down towards the airfield and picking up a handkerchief with the tip of one wing [Wikipedia]

Thanks for  posting this interesting display, James.  Ernst Udet was one
of the more colourful gentlemen of the time, and not only in his choice
of markings and hues on his aircraft...LO! :)

Cheers
Ernie :)

I agree, those are really interesting. Imagine a military hero agreeing to have his name on a brand of cigarettes today.
