Hi Michael
I was looking for a really nice and easy build as a sort of 1/32 rehearsal...... Anyway.
I’m no expert on the Dr.I and absolutely not a rivet counter (as a look at my completed models will show), but I have read about what seem like significant things. However, I do think it important to say that some, but only some, of these reflect the fact that while Roden may have based their model on the best available plans at the time, these have now been overtaken*. Others may be able to fill in the detail.
The cowling lacks the distinctive riveted faceplate which seems a big miss on Roden's part.
The outline shapes of the rudder and elevators are slightly at variance with the most recent plans. In fact, the tailplane itself is rather curious and I’m not quite sure how to describe it. Imagine the entire central part from fore to aft (top and bottom) for a width of about 14mm dropped as a sort of rift valley relative to the tips.
On the forward upper fuselage decking I think there should be an oil filler cap access point just beyond the firewall on the starboard side, almost matching that on the port side. I’m also not sure that the moulded detail on the lower surface of the undercarriage wing fairing is correct.
There is no attempt to replicate the long v-shaped plywood panels which ran either side of the fuselage from the firewall to just aft (I think) of the tubular framework behind the seat. These would have been visible looking inside the cockpit. I've read somewhere that the PART etched inserts are not big enough.
It has also been suggested to me that the decals are not entirely accurate for 477/17 as used by Richthofen and that there might be a slight problem with the location of the undercarriage.
Best wishes from the Old World to the New and by the way, I love the work you are doing on the Pup.
Nigel
