Just bought a WNW Roland DVIb, should arrive in a week or so.  I'm holding my breath and standing on one leg impatiently waiting.

Look, I feel pretty sure that WnW will release the definitive Fokker Dr.I (or Kokker Dr.I as a recent Histoires & Collections publication has it listed) in due course, but I'm gambling that it won't be this Christmas and the Roden model was going dirt cheap.

Given the known weaknesses in what is nevertheless, a reasonable offering from Roden, I'd appreciate any advice on upgrade sets.

Best wishes

I just started one in the hopes for a quick build. IMHO the cowl from Aviattic is very nice, eduard has etched fret for the kit that has a few helpful things, guns from Gaspatch or Master and maybe a part or two stolen from WNW DVII leftovers is all I am using....

Hi Nigel

I'm also not holding my breath waiting for WnW to release a Fokker Dr.I.  It's really an aircraft that's a must for my collection and long overdue as my next build.

I have both the Roden and it's upgraded Encore kit as my starting point.  I reckon Roden/Encore have provided a solid foundation for this aircraft and I'm still collecting some aftermarket add-ons.  I have:

- Vector resin Le Rhone/Oberursel  110 hp engine No: 32-003
- HGW seatbelts No: 132006
- Part PE set No: S32-028
- Aviattic resin cowling
- Pheon Models decals for the JGII series No: 32002

I'd also have to add in a set of Master Models spandau machine guns.

Most PE is waisted on me because I only use selected parts that enhance the model.  The other thing to consider is ? some lack of definition on the wing ribs.  I reckon Bob Der Beemer has some lovely Strippers (tapes) that will help with this issue and I'll need these as well.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Steven

I forgot to post here. Bruno Lörzer's Albatros D-V was the first (so called 'serious') WWI plane kit I bought, and the only one at the time I built it. Since then I added a few stuff to my stash (all 1/72, what else?):
-Siemens-Schukert D-III/D-IV / Eastern Express. Sorry no link for this one, the Eastern Express page I had found is down. But you all know the bird...
-SPAD XIII late / Eduard Profipack: http://www.eduard.com/store/Eduard/Plastic-kits/Profipack/Spad-XIII-1-72.html?cur=1
(the kind of machine that makes you proud for being a frog eater, even if I don't eat frogs...)
-Pfalz D-IIIa and D-IIIa 'Aces' / MAC Distribution: http://www.mac.distribution.cz/model-kits.php?akce=model&nazev=pfalz-d-iiia&id=3
 and http://www.mac.distribution.cz/model-kits.php?akce=model&nazev=pfalz-d-iiia-aces&id=102
-Phönix D-II / MAC Distribution: http://www.mac.distribution.cz/model-kits.php?akce=model&nazev=phoenix-d-ii&id=7
-Albatros D-II / Roden: http://www.roden.eu/HTML/006.htm
-Fokker D-VII early / Roden: http://www.roden.eu/HTML/025.htm
-Albatros D-Va / Roden: http://www.roden.eu/HTML/032.htm
-Sopwith Camel / Academy: http://www.academy.co.kr/6q/board_news_main.asp?pMenuId=BOARD00008&pCode=858

That's all for now, I've planned a few more soon (Nieuport 11 or 16, Fokker E-V, Roland D-VI, SPAD VII, Morane type N, RAF SE5a, Fokker DrI, Nieuport 28...etc)

That is a very fine stash, Vincent. Almost all of those models are pleasure to build. With one exception. Do yourself a favour, send that Academy's Camel to the trash bin and buy a Roden kit, which is a little gem, their best offering IMHO.

Hi Michael

I was looking for a really nice and easy build as a sort of 1/32 rehearsal......  Anyway.

I’m no expert on the Dr.I and absolutely not a rivet counter (as a look at my completed models will show), but I have read about what seem like significant things. However, I do think it important to say that some, but only some, of these reflect the fact that while Roden may have based their model on the best available plans at the time, these have now been overtaken*. Others may be able to fill in the detail.

The cowling lacks the distinctive riveted faceplate which seems a big miss on Roden's part.

The outline shapes of the rudder and elevators are slightly at variance with the most recent plans. In fact, the tailplane itself is rather curious and I’m not quite sure how to describe it. Imagine the entire central part from fore to aft (top and bottom)  for a width of about 14mm dropped as a sort of rift valley relative to the tips.

On the forward upper fuselage decking I think there should be an oil filler cap access point just beyond the firewall on the starboard side, almost matching that on the port side. I’m also not sure that the moulded detail on the lower surface of the undercarriage wing fairing is correct.

There is no attempt to replicate the long v-shaped plywood panels which ran either side of the fuselage from the firewall to just aft (I think) of the tubular framework behind the seat. These would have been visible looking inside the cockpit. I've read somewhere that the PART etched inserts are not big enough.

It has also been suggested to me that the decals are not entirely accurate for 477/17 as used by  Richthofen and that there might be a slight problem with the location of the undercarriage.

Best wishes from the Old World to the New and by the way, I love the work you are doing on the Pup.

Nigel

*The plans I’ve been using are those drawn and traced by Marty Digmayer as featured in volume 24, number three (May/June 2008) of Windsock Worldwide.

Thanks for the advice Przemol! I thought they had only the naval version of the Camel in their range, but I've just checked their site and found the others.

Well my WWI orders have arrived. My WNW kits look like they might have made it to Cold Lake after a long and frustrating trip. Will know better on my way to work.
Got in the brand new Life Like decals Fokker DVII part 3 and 4. They look awesome and I want to do almost every scheme on them.

And my 2 Roden Albatros' came in. Ron sent me a book on the Albatros DI and DII and I was sold. Had to get one. Then I saw a Albatros W.4 build and it got me thinking conversion. Also an Albatros D.III jumped into my cart and has found its way here. Woo Hoo.
