I'm in the process of scratch building a workshop to accompany my WnW Albatros, and figured I'd paint "Workshop" or "Shop" on the door in German. However, I can only speak English, some Italian, and some Latin, but no German. Since I relied on Google Translate to help, I want to make sure this is correct. It gave me two choices, "Reparatur Werkstatt" and "Werkstatt". Does anyone know which might be more appropriate? Or is there something else?

It might depend on which German ;) If your machine is from Jasta 5 or 16b, best ask a Bavarian :)

I may be wrong but it could have been called 'Repair Shop' as that it what they did there and the German language is precise.

This of course translates in modern day German to ReparaturWerkstatt with Werkstatt as an alternative.

Not much help am I!!

So many options! Maybe I'll just use my ignorant Americanese and call it "Der Werkin Shoppen". ::)

My native German speaking partner advises me that "Werkstatt" is a general (and correct) term for Workshop, and has no specific regional variation (she is of Bavarian descent too).

If the workshop in question is specifically a repair workshop, then "Reparaturwerkstatt" is correct - and is all one word.

Just Werkstatt is correct in my opinion. I'm not german, but I have to speak a lot of german at work.

I could guess also the word Wartungshalle as general for maintenance shop.

Werkstatt sounds to be more commercial. Wartungshalle seems to be more for the Jastas.

But there are enough real german members here who will know.
