My new toy.
« on: May 24, 2013, 11:54:55 PM »
Hello all,
I recently treated myself to an all singing all dancing laser guided vinyl cutter/plotter/engraver/embosser/mask cutting machine.

My project for tonight will be to try my hand at engraving. I'm hoping the design I've cobbled together will look good, but one never really knows until the scratchin' is over. :D My first attempt will be on clear film - see how we go from there. I'm hoping if all goes well I can upgrade to aluminium sheet for the finished piece. This will then be applied to a model base, where, one day in the future, when hell has frozen over and the sky has collapsed, I finally get to place a model worthy of this forum upon it.... Dream the dream!  ;D

In future I hope to use the machine to produce a group of generic paint masks for German & British WW1 Aircraft in 48th and 32nd. Crosses + roundels... you get the picture?!  ;) These will be called Genericsⓒ and will be as cheap as I can possibly make them and available to the guys on here first... but I'm getting ahead of myself. I need much reference material and a good grounding in vector based graphics before I can bring these to market. Wish me luck!

I will let you know how it all turns out.
Cheers,

Thanks guys!

Just to let you know the engraving went really well, apart from the computer crashing on the "air cut" everything worked out fine on the clear plastic sheet.

I will post up a picture when I find time.
Cheers
Bob

hi bob,

I'm very pleased about your last toy... a friend of mine here had purchased one last year, mainly to use in railroad modelling, but I suspect that the limit is just in our imagination!

I asked him to solve this equation:
a typical italian railroad fence, made by iron armed concrete.
3577

it must be on identical modules, and in 1/35 scale.
solution:

just to say that applications may be in whatever field, and/or scale!
now we are working at paper jungle plants....

so, enjoy all the fun from it, and -sure- a little bit of business! ;)

Great stuff Bob, looking forward to seeing what you are going to create, the paint masks sound really interesting.

Hi Lance,
I will make the weeeee buckles for as long as I'm breathing and for as long as fellow modelers have the need for them - fear not!  ;)

Here is the result of my 1st engraving. Not bad me thinks.  :)

Cheers!

Wishing you all the best in your new endeavor Bob. If you're just thinking about striking out in vector graphics, it seems like a steep learning curve to surmount but you'll suddenly experience that 'V8' moment where the basic concept falls into place and it's all downhill from there. While I use both Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW, the latter is far more intuitive than the former for a newcomer. If you're a Mac user, then it's Adobe for you but if you have a Windows based system, the Corel suite is very reasonably priced and comes with PhotoPaint which is Corel's answer to PhotoShop. Sure, PhotoShop is industry standard but in my experience, the Corel family will do everything you want. Just my humble opinion though!

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the heads up.  ;)
I use both mac and windows OS so I'm sure I will find the right software to help me on my way  :)
