1/32 Sopwith Pup RNAS

This will be the WnW Pup flown by Sqn Cdr Edwin Dunning. Not sure how I'll display it yet, perhaps as on the deck of HMS Furious, and I'll be using the fantastic RNAS figure from Kellerkind Miniatures to go alongside it.

I've been working on this one for a few weeks now, although I'd done the cockpit before I started on my 1/16 Camel:


Not that long ago, but already there's things I'd do differently. There's still lots to learn as I go.

So in the last few weeks I've got the fuselage together, filled the seams (is it just me or are those seams that run across the flat undersides particularly stubborn?), and pained the preshading for the CDL:



So I'm now adding in the main colours needed, before getting started on the details; which I'll enjoy more as I can brush paint it... I'm still learning with the airbrush.

I've also made a start on the figure, but lots to do here too- just putting in the basic colours at the moment.



I've just received some Uschi wood grain decals, which I'll see if I can use for the struts as well as the cockpit panel.

Yes, Great start and those pesky flat surface seams are the hardest to fill.  They certainly try mens souls.

This is coming along nicely and a nice historically significant aircraft too.  Figure looks alright as well, but; isn't he supposed to be standing up?

Not much progress to show for the last few days... just several small disasters.

First I started to shade around the aluminium panels to make the oval access panels 'pop' a bit more (if I build another this is a part I would rescribe lightly). But even after waiting a day for the aluminium to dry, the Vallejo thinner (I used a lot) seemed to attack it and peel it up in patches Lesson learnt... use water next time. Vallejo paint is great but so fragile until it gets under some varnish.

Next I decaled and varnished the tail. Lots of microsol needed to get the decals to conform over the elevators, but it all went fine. But I've been using a rattlecan for the varnishing, and decided to use matt over the decals (I've previously only used satin on my SE5a, but I want to try heavier weathering on this one). For whatever reason the damn stuff produced horrible orange peal and fisheyes... it looked really horrible, and I was just glad it washed off without too much damage done.

So, I'm now waiting for varnish that I can airbrush to arrive...

All part of the learning process of course, but it's not the fun way to learn!

If someone had just glued my arm to a plastic rod for ease of painting, I'd want a lie down too.

Not, I appreciate, a very interesting update. But it does at least have a half decent coat of varnish, and the decals are no longer unpeeled at the edges.

Anyway, I'm using this small part to try and shade things and get the detail to pop out a bit more. I'm not sure how successful it is, but I prefer it to the look of the plain parts and it should help the weathering.

While I wait for the gloss to dry on the fuselage, I did some more painting on the figure. Nearly there now, just needs a few layers of matt varnish.

I've got the decals on, so I can start on the weathering next
