ANZAC Day airshow at Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, NZ
« on: April 29, 2012, 12:54:53 PM »

The weather wasn't great in Wellington on the morning but I headed over the hill to Masterton hoping it would be better over at Hood Aerodrome. Started raining as I passed through Carterton so I was prepared to see 'Airshow cancelled' notices at the aerodrome. But then the rain eased to a light shower and continually improved until by 2:30 it was actually blue skies. Yay!

First job is a quick scan of the lineup to see if there is anything new, but the planes were only slowly being wheeled out from the hangar due to the weather. Took a free ride on the Old Bill Bus with my daughter. Checked out the TVAL tent where I bought another WNW Albatros and one of the decal sheets 'The Bavarians' for the DVa. An amazing array of vintage cars were on display (more on those another time).

Interesting to see the BE2f and the Biff getting refueled. Possible diorama opportunities come to mind.

It is an Autumn evening show and the shadows got longer and longer. All the planes in the collection got to fly, in various combinations.

Meet the Fockers:

Beware the Hun in the sun:

I loved standing in the prop wash of the two Albatroses as they warmed up ready for their show

Last public showing of the RE8 before it heads away to the UK

As the sun sank lower everything was bathed in a lovely Autumn evening glow

The Fokker DVIIIs were drenched in castor oil from the exhausts

A perfect day out. Grateful thanks to the team at The Vintage Aviator Ltd and all the pilots and support people who made the show a fantastic success.

Why don't you all plan a trip over to EnZed for the next season of shows? It doesn't get any better than this!

Thank you James for posting your photos, what a wonderful sight to see all those beautiful aircraft together. It must have been great to witness the sounds, sights and smells of these WW1 aircraft.

Thanks Keith, Keith & Des. I understand the client for the RE8 (and Albatros 7343) is the RAF Museum collection. Will that mean it will continue to fly?  ???

Great photo's and great colour - what camera/lens are you using if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the feedback. My camera is a modest one, Canon Powershot A2000 IS, 10 Mp, 6X optical zoom. Its the zoom that lets me down when doing flying shots. I am discussing an upgrade with my wife, but haven't decided whether a gruntier still camera or an HD video camera would do what I want best. Can't really afford a digital SLR at the moment (unless I start selling CDs of my photos in hi-res). I can't get over the file size of HD video, might hacve to upgrade my PC as well if I go down that route.
Cheers
James

James,

The Powershot might be modest but is sure takes some great photo's! You've also got a good eye which helps! ;D
You know a DSLR with a zoom would allow you to get even closer 'close ups' for the detail junkies!!

Cheers,

Andrew

Many thanks James!

I really appreciate your comprehensive post of images from the airshow. They are very useful for reference purposes too as you have the modeller's "eye" for the details we want.

Kind regards

Hi James, I'm not too sure about that, if they go to the RAF Hendon museum into the Grahame White Factory then probably not.  >:(
I'm not sure if they fly exhibits out of Cosford.

Best Regards

Keith

Hi James!
Want to add my thanks to the others here, beautiful subjects well captured and, along with your many other contributions here and elsewhere, truly precious to the serious modeller.
I find myself thinking more and more often of a long flight west, I'd probably have the "big one" if I experienced the sights, sounds, and smells at a Show such as this! When is the next year's event?
In the interim, keep up the wonderful work and, yes, you should try to identify a market for your photos. Of course your "pro bono" contributions would have to continue else we'd all make the trip and find you with dire consequences!
Sincere Thanks again,
Cheers,
Lance :) ;)

  James,
Thanks so much for sharing these fanastic photos of your ANZAC Day Airshow. One of these days I'll got to make it over there and see the sights and of course the airshow too.
Highest Regards,

A fellow Wellington IPMS club member, David Money, very kindly dropped off a CD of photos he took at the ANZAC Day airshow. David's camera is a Canon EOS 50D and he has a big telephoto lens so gets up nice and close on flying shots. Envy, envy . . . He is happy for me to share them, so here you go:

I love this one:

If anyone would like hi-res versions, just let me know.
