RN gun turret platforms
« on: May 11, 2013, 12:29:49 PM »
Does anyone know where I can find photos of the shipboard platforms Pups were positioned on? I have the Datafile and Special but need more info on the turret mounts, beams, tie downs etc.

Hi Steve,
a few years ago there was an article on scratchbuilding a gun turret platform in one of the UK produced modelling mags, but I can't remember if it was Scale Models or another mag,(not much help I know, but maybe another member remembers the article,I think he even built the turret!).
Here's a link to a guy who built HMS Couragous in 1/700th with a Pup on a platform, may be of some help!Beautiful modelling from Jim Bauman. http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/hms/Courageous/700-amw-jb/pages/Courageous%20finish26.html

I'm building Dunning's Pup at the moment, and had been looking for this kind of reference too. Found a few photos, but nothing detailed enough, so I may just have it on the deck of HMS Furious.

This build is quite amazing:

That's incredible, especially as it incorporates rigging too.

Cheers,

Chris

This link has some very good images for the Pup,including an overhead shot of a Pup on its platform.http://flyingmachines.ru/Site2/Crafts/Craft25443.htm
Link to Admiralty Modelworks HMS Glorious kit, with photos of the etch details for the platforms, near bottom of page.http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/hms/glorious/700-amw/glorious-review.html
Hope they provide you with some more details that you can utilize.

Here's some more I found:

Some really great photos here. Some of the Pup, but check out the painting of the Camel launching from that little boat... would make a great diorama

I guess this was the inspiration for the model I posted above:

Camel on HMS Tiger turret:

Not RN, not a pup (Camel), but better quality photo than usual, so maybe useful anyway:

  Steve,
In reference to the Pup launching from a Lighter Rizzo mentioned. Rosemount Hobbies made a kit of the Lighter and platform in 1/72 scale. I haven't seen one in a while but they do show up on E-bay from time to time. If you prefer a lager scale scale the Lighter wouldn't be too difficult to scratch build my old friend. Anyway just a thought.
Highest Regards,

Thankyou all. The info you have provided gives me an excellent basis to flesh out what I want. While not building the entire turret, the turret top and platform is what Im  using as a base for the Pup Im slooooowly trying to build. Gregory, the lighter is not what Im looking for this time but boy the combo of that Ferris painting in one of the links and the model in 1/72 you note certainly provides fuel for a later Camel build!!

  Steve,
I just remembered that Mike West of Lone Star was developing a kit featuring a turret and platform kit for Camel in 1/48 scale. It's not listed as underdevelopment now but that doesn't mean he's not still working on. You might want to contact him and see if it's still in the works,if not Mike's good at sharing information. You leave know the kit may be available shortly or he could point you in the right directions for drawing and information.

Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

PS: In the mean time I may have a drawing for you that I look for here. I believe it's drawing of the platform carried aboard the USS Texas around 1919. When I find it I'll send it your way.
