Rib tape material

[Berman]

       A very good material for replicating rib tapes is the .003 to .0035 inch thick self adhesive vinyl available at instant sign shops. They always have large sheet remnants which they are happy to give for free if you explain your modeling needs. Be sure to ask for the permanent adhesive variety. This adheres quite well and sticks even better the longer it is on. To provide a better surface for painting, I recommend brushing or spraying(do this prior to cutting and applying to model) a very light and quick coat of the purple primer solvent that is normally used to etch PVC plumbing pipes prior to the application of cement. Caution: too much PVC primer will melt the vinyl.  Enamel paint adheres nicely to the etched vinyl. I have not tried acrylic paints.
     To cut consistent narrow strips, epoxy two razor or knife blades together with the appropiate sized gap filled in with piece of sheet styrene. Cut along a metal straight edge. This technique also works for decal strips.
