Model Cellar Billy Bishop - or not as the case may be.

Hi All,
Picked up the Model Cellar Billy Bishop and it really is a great kit.
If I could drop a hint to all of the figure sculptors out there, if you are going to sculpt a particular personality, feel free to add an additional head - no disrepect to Billy Bishop, but he isn't what I was after - but the sculpting of the flying suit is superb.

One Verlinden head later and I have a non specific Australian Flying Corps pilot looking somewhat melancholy - maybe dreading his next sortie. Certainly many did.
Mostly acrylics but the face is in oils. The face is still wet and so a little glossy. Just a few touchups to go and its all done.

Whild I am dropping hints - if Wingnuts could release their resin figures.....

Excellent work Carpo!  Thanks for suggesting this possibility.  The flight gear and pose are excellent on the Bishop figure, so changing out heads is a great idea for a generic RFC pilot. ;D  Wouldn't have occurred to my pea brain. ;)  BTW, the painting is first rate.

Outstanding figure painting my old friend. The lights and shadows are perfection. The head you used looks very much like one of the German heads I have in the stash.

Excellent work. Hornet makes dozens of bare heads amongst others that can be used as well.

@Steve - haven't heard of Hornet - I'll go looking...
[edit] - I took a look at those Hornet heads - absolutely the way to go for a figure like this!!!

@Gregory - I think the heads are a Viet Nam character head set - I have had them a very long time so they may not make this particluar set any more (I am sure they used similar heads in different sets too)

Here he is finished (even the cigarette comes in the kit!!)

Very nicely done Carpo!

As Steve mentioned, for anyone else interested, Hornet heads are simply superb and well worth a look. If only I could do them justice with my painting.

As much maligned as Bishop is these days in some circles, I'll be picking up one of these figures myself as he was a boyhood hero of mine.

Fantastic work! I must concur with Des, the leather looks quite realistic. Sadly, creating the proper sheen for leather is a skill that still eludes me. I've been toying with the idea of "Frankenstein-ing" my own pilot and crew figures. Nice to see such a great example!

Thanks all for the comments.
@ lawman - I simply give the leather a coat of satin picture varnish! I think most of the effect is created by the texture of the resin itself....
