Fokker DR I - eduard 1/48
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:54:58 AM »
This is the Eduard 1/48 kit. The interior framework has been rebuilt, Master Cast gun barrells. The engine has new pushrods added, spark plugs and the wires, but you can't see any of this, just have to take my word! The streaked finish is oils over a Floquil Antique White base. This is the Triplane of Robert Greim, who became Ritter Von Greim and the last head of the Luftwaffe in WWII.
 I call it "Silver Tail."

The figure is a Mike Good  Model Cellar.

I used the base color of Floquil White for the l/e chipping, especially the l/e above the wheels. The mud is MIG pastels.

The photos are the work of Tom Evens, ace photographer!
Yes, I realized that I missed "mudding" the edge of the landing gear winglet. that will be corrected!

Truly stunning Dr.I, KA!  And that pilot is the most convincing 1/48 figure I'v ever seen.
Cheers,

That's really beautiful all around.  Your streaky camoflage is fantastic and well-complemented by the red and grey you used for the markings. Is the Antique White that you used for base color from the Floquil RR Colors line?

It is one of the best streaking renditions I have ever seen. Congratulations - you have built a fantastic Dr.I model!

I cannot off hand recall ever seeing a better Eduard DR1, and the two "scenic" photos are. I think, the best of that type I have seen. Thanks for showing them.

Thanks all for the compliments!
The Eduard kit was a fine build. I DID NOT like the attachment of the u/c. It had no positive attachment/alignment at either top or bottom of the struts. This made me really appreciate ,even more, the engineering of the Wingnut kits! I also made some assembly and detail modifications that made doing the streaking easier:
I seperated the wings, lowest and middle , into left and right halves, so I could complete the fuselage, top cowl and the low wing spar cover to ease painting. I also removed the side carb intakes and replaced later with tubing so I could smoothly apply the streaking.
The base coat was Floquil  RR "antique white." That's my go to base color for all CDL applications and for any wood applications also! I would be lost without that color and a good raw umber wash!
I have yet to gain the habit of the in-progress shot! Sorry, I have none.  I am working on a WnW Rumpler at the moment and trying to incorporate it into my build style, but it is really slowing down the process. I work from "inspiration to inspiration" and I just haven't incorporated photo taking into that process yet! I really appreciate the modelers that do and I promise I am trying to gain , yet another aspect of this hobby.
Thanks again. In my next photo session with Tom, I will get some more shots of the " Fokker Streak" and I will outline my steps.

Hello KA:

The streaking is great!  Outstanding work all around turned out a neat looking model.  The figure ain't bad either!
I know what you mean about taking pictures.  Sometimes I would just as soon build than stop and take photos.  At least I have a record of the build.

Best

Beautiful work on a pretty Tripe. As others have said the streaking is perfect. The Antique White base is one to save and use for me!!

over a buffed out primer base, I apply the antique white, then a wash of raw umber, gloss coat and she's ready for the oil streaking. Use the oil paint thinned and put under a 75 watt bulb , about 6 inches, overnight and it's dry to the touch the next day.
